I can't wait for the fanfiction opportunities involving these back stories, maybe I'll write one after my exams are over. On another point, I found the back stories interesting because it explains why the characters reacted the way they did throughout the movie. Sorry, I’m talking in a spoilerish way, so it would be best if you ignored my comments if you haven’t seen the movie. For example, I always wondered why Cassie was so against killing Trey , I put it down to her being more emotional than the ret of the crew. Of course, now we know the full reason. It makes complete sense that Cassie was against killing Trey for the good of the mission, because it reminded her of what she had to decide- Killing her unborn child for the good of the mission. I found this to be the most fascinating points of the backstories, because it actually explained one of the major parts of the film. All the stuff about Harvey's wife also makes him seem more than just a bit of a jerk (I admit that I just assumed he was selfish) We now know that he was desperate to survive for the sake of his wife. It also explains his slight detachment from the 'glories' of the mission (him reaction in the mercury scene) More depth is also put into the relationship between Capa and Kaneda. It explains Capa's feelings after the shield fixing, Capa saw him as a sort of father figure It also explains Trey's extreme guilt due to what a genius he is. He is so much smarter than everyone else, that he blames himself for things more than he should' And of course, Mace was the one whose backstory I found most interesting in comparison with his behaviour. His military background and, therefore, the reason for his dislike of Capa. His practical way of thinking (he has never read a book for pleasure) and this is clear through his view of life and death. and the dreams about Cassie, that's just something extra for the shippers!

"Lamentation." See-- I don't think that. Why she had to have had an abortion to be against a "practicality" killing makes no dramatic sense to me. (I haven't been in the childbearing boat-- nor, due to a surgical incident, will I ever be-- but I'm under the vague impression that a woman's view of her pregnancy pretty much trumps her views with regard to other aspects of human life.) At that point, to me Cassie seems most normal-- most like the "everyperson" with whom the audience can relate. In other words, she could have been the voice of common decency without having had *that* experience-- or without us knowing about it. (I'm thinking here of (1) the regularity with which people on juries oppose the death penalty and (2) society's regular opposition to euthanasia.) What I actually found most chilling in that scene was the ease with which Capa agreed to it. Maybe it was a trick of his line delivery, but Cillian Murphy sounds almost enthusiastic. Short form: I think we needed character detail more than character backstories. Why? Because Mr. Garland should know that in this internet age people will waste hours and days debating things like first names, whereas it's the task of the screenplay to hint at and define motivation. Frankly, too, I think that Mr. Garland has no possible way of knowing how a woman would feel about having an abortion. He simply shouldn't have gone there. It wasn't necessary, and it's certainly left me feeling more than my fair share of queasy. Us doing the "fan speculation" thing, fine-- i.e., "Cassie's really upset about 'X'. I wonder if...." But him feeding us information like that: uh uh. Put it on the screen, pal, or don't bring it up. (Conversely, a hint to me: Don't play into it by reading backstories! ) Like with Trey, too: we KNOW he's a smart guy-- or else he wouldn't be the navigator on this mission. So of course he's upset about the miscalculation. And just SMELL that bridge burning--! ;D

Yeah, I get what you guys are saying. Sometimes backstories are good if they help explain who a character is, but Cassie's pregnancy? Unless there is some really big Deep And Meaningful scene about that in the Deleted Scenes of Sunshine - which I will most certainly be buying the first day it's out on DVD - we didn't really need it. All it's done is create a frenzy amongst shippers and fangirls alike. All this talk about Mace being the father - for all our analysis, the father probably was just some random guy on earth, and has nothing to do with the mission!
Arrgghhh!
*insert shipper/fangirl rage here*

I think Cassie's pregnancy was essential to her overall character. It served as the (1) main reason for her hold on morality and the (2) main support against any complaints surrounding the "weaker sex" issue (aka "Crying is typical female behavior"; My response: "She's emotional because of something that happened in her recent past.").

But the debate going on here is the identity of Cassie's child right? As far as we know, she isn't intimately involved with anyone on earth. 4 months before leaving earth orbit... this means they're deep into the training by then... which also means that the people she's constantly with would have to be the other seven people of the crew. So speculations suggesting that whoever fathered her child would have to be either of the six guys is really plausible.
This would lead then to the question: Who amongst these six guys is the father of Cassie's aborted child? Searle is already canceled out, leaving five: Trey, Harvey, Kaneda, Capa and Mace. It's safe to say that Harvey is out since he is overly attached to his wife, which now leaves us with four: Trey, Kaneda, Capa and Mace. If you analyze the interactions of the characters in the movie... you can see that Capa & Mace are the most likely candidates.
So now the final question: Is it Mace? Or is it Capa? And so the shipper battle begins between Capsie and Massie fans.
Backing up the Massie ship is the fact that Mace dreams about Cassie. And that he seems to hate Capa's guts (perhaps seeing him as a rival for Cassie's affection). However, this only proves that Mace is attracted to Cassie... and NOT vice versa.
Contrary to what most fansites state, Capsie do have more romantic potential. For one, Cassie seems to always follow Capa around... even watching him while he sleeps. The one with the most interactions and private conversation in the movie were between Capa and Cassie. But we can also see that Capa is not into Cassie as Cassie is into Capa. This is understandable. Capa has a lot of things going on in his mind. But we know that there was definitely something extra going on between them when Danny Boyle initially planned for them to have a love scene in the Oxygen Room:From www.thisislondon.co.uk/film/article-23391332-details/A+star+is+reborn/article.do :
The hero is a sensitive, zealous physicist called Capa (played by Irish actor Cillian Murphy). Pretty technician Cassie (Rose Byrne) does her best to get his attention, but it's the sun he is dazzled by and she just can't compete with that greedy, gorgeous yellow orb. Sunshine is almost oppressively sensuous, yet sex doesn't figure in this film.
"We tried to put sex in, believe me!" says Boyle, an oddly attractive 50-year old (think Morrissey crossed with Paul Daniels) whose broad Northern vowels still proclaim his working-class roots.
"We had a great scene planned between Capa and Cassie. In the oxygen garden. It would have looked great!" He shakes himself from the reverie. "But no. Sex in space just doesn't work."If it would have happened in space, it could have happened on earth. Cassie may have hid all these from Capa seeing as Capa is the most vital person from the crew. The pregnancy could have emotionally affected him and his way of thinking. And Cassie knew that the mission and the hope of mankind rested on his shoulders. So she secretly terminated the pregnancy to avoid further complications.
So I may just be biased when I say Capa could be the father. But hey, it is a very possible speculation based on the points I've stated above.
**NOTE:
Did you guys see Cassie tap Capa's nose while she was suiting him up? So cute! Note by chero: It seems like the spoiler button doesn't work if the word "spoiler" is in all caps.
