Well, let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Sanada san. With that in mind, forgive me if I bore anyone with too much information.
His body of work is not limited to films but includes some fantastic stage work as well. For example, he was asked to play the role of the Fool in a 1999 Royal Shakespearean Co. production of King Lear. He received an honorary MBE (Member of the British Empire) for that role.
In his twenties he was a bit of a pop star. The guy does it all.
He can stop your heart with one look, he can make you cry uncontrollably and laugh hysterically. To see him work with children is amazing --- the tenderness and bond --- I guess would be a good word.
If you are not familiar with his work here are some recent and easy to find movies (Netflick and Blockbuster in the US):
• The Last Samurai, Twilight Samurai (in these two films he plays opposite ends of the spectrum: a tough hard man in TLS and loveable guy who cares deeply about his children in the second. BTW, Twilight Samurai was nominated for Best Foreign Film/Oscars)
• The White Countess (Merchant/Ivory film)
• The Promise (be sure to get your hands on the original version not the edited one that was shown in American theaters)
• Onmyoji
• Ringu (remade into the American version The Ring)
I noticed a post in another section of the forum were people where discussing what the actors do around the set in their spare time. Well, Hiro is WELL KNOWN for studying his lines and the entire script. He is very serious about his work. I think Gia mentioned that she observed this and Jackie Chan has commented on it as he and Hiro have been working on RH3.
James Ivory has such respect for him that he cast Hiro for his next film, The City of Your Final Destination. He will play the gay lover to Anthony Hopkins’ character!!!
On imdb.com, I read a post by someone who had seen a screening of Sunshine and the writer remarked that Hiro was tremendous (or some similar word).
With such a fantastic group of actors, talented director, etc. Sunshsine has such potential to be a huge hit. I'm looking forward to March.
PS:Brittany, you asked a question about The Last Samurai – my fav parts etc. I’ll post that soon. Just wanted to get this up for folks unfamiliar with Sanada san.
