So now this is apparently making actual news stories. And Fox Searchlight might want to take a look at this. The writer has the impression--which has surely been given to a number of people--that there is something wrong with the film. So, way to go Fox Searchlight. Good work. www.slashfilm.com/2007/02/28/sunshines-release-date-troubles/

I came really close to commenting about how Searchlight is apparently mainly made up of douchebags and that's the real reason for the mess-up, but I declined. I'm so glad this isn't an official forum and I can actually say things like that...
I'm with you, though. Nice job, jerks. Now everyone thinks the movie's going to suck. All the Internet fanbase (who isn't fortunate enough to be one of us on this forum) is going to think it's awful and they're never going to see it--and let's face it, the hype around this film is the Internet fanbase.
I hope they weren't thinking pushing the release date back was going to get more people interested in it. Looks to me like pushing the release date back is killing momentum and giving a lot of people in the US and Canada time to say, "Screw it."
Sigh. Siiiiiiiiigh.

This would be the perfect link to send to Fox Searchlight.

This would be the perfect link to send to Fox Searchlight. Agreed. ...okay, fine, I'll send it. No need for threats.

I've said this before: The first date mentioned for release was March 2007. They then pushed it forward to October 2006. That changed back to March 2007 when they realised just how many effects shots they were going to have to do (the film was only finally completed in December). The UK was the first to change to April (for UK-specific film release reasons) and I think everywhere was always going to release after the UK anyway, so everyone else moved their release dates. Some countries open the same weekend, other countries open a week or a few later (depending entirely upon their country-specific film release reasons). The US uhmmmed and ahhhhed for weeks/months. And in the end I genuinely have no idea why they made the decision they did. I've just read 11 pages worth of 'first impressions' from the 50 or so film journalists who have seen it so far in the UK. People who rated it gave it 4 to 5 out of 5 stars. General feelings were that it was really good: 'wow!' 'I loved it!' 'I can't wait to see it again'. Several people said that film fans will be discussing the ending, meaning and subtext for years to come. A few absolutely, freakin' LOVED it- 'a masterpiece',' genuinely amazing', 'blew my mind into tiny pieces', 'the first truly great sci-fi thriller of the 21st century'- and, of course, there were a few who didn't like it- only one who really didn't like it (though he said it was "sci-fi porn". Like that's a bad thing?!!), one who said it wasn't her thing (she was from Cosmo magazine and said it wasn't a 'Cosmo Girl' kind of film. Thank Christ for that!) and one was religious and had some 'issues' with it, but also said it was very thought provoking. I honestly don't know if Searchlight's decision is based on the fact that they think it would get lost in the plethora of summer blockbusters or if they think it's going to be a slow opener building to madness through word of mouth and that autumn is the best time for those things or if 'intelligent films' do better when everyone's going back to school or what. I honestly don't know. But the film most definitely doesn't suck.

Seriously... And I even like Cosmo Girl films! Mean Girls is a work of art, I say!
But really, I know that we on this forum don't think the film is going to suck at all. I'm pretty much 99.87% sure that it's going to do the whole thing where it "blows my mind into tiny pieces," and all that, but trying to look at it from a different (read: objective) point of view, I can't help but be weary. How many people are just going to give up because they're sick of waiting around for it to come out? And naturally there are going to be those speculations about how the movie is awful and they're waiting for it to come out later on so that it doesn't have to compete with the movies that are supposed to be great (I mean, obviously, something like Spiderman 3 or Fantastic Four 2! Those films are what dreams are made of!).
I just don't think Searchlight is even looking at this from a fan's perspective at all. It's so frustrating to be at the mercy of this company right now.
I guess I'm just trying not to be so completely one-sided. I'm arguing for people I don't even really care about, and I have no idea what that's all about. I'm going to see it soon either way, so why should I care when the release date is? I guess I just feel so attached to it all that I can't help it. There are honestly just too many thoughts (complete with several profanities, might I add) to even write them all down. I just keep staring at the blinking insertion point in this little white box.
So I'll repeat myself:
SIGH.

I'm going to go with Gia's ideas on this one. That first weekend is usually the make/break box office take. So if they feel it would do better on an opening weekend and hopefully stick around longer in the Fall, then I'll be the optimist here and agree. If it hits around the time of the summer films, there's no guarantee the movie will be in the theater more than a couple of weeks. A Scanner Darkly literally played in my local theater for 4 days before they replaced it with some low-brow drivel that the crowds flocked to see. I kid you not. I was going to see it with my brother and it was gone. Oh well, it's not like I'm NOT going to see it just cause I have to wait longer. I remember when Moulin Rouge was supposed to come out in the fall and then we had to wait till summer. Not the same movie, but you get my drift. I'm with you too, Amanda: SIGH.

I was really looking forward to seeing it on march 16 but if we really want the movie to do good then i guess it will be pushed back and depending if it is going to have a u.s. premiere, or be at toronto film fest then going to the premiere would be awesome.

I was going to see it with my brother and it was gone. So that's what happened to it! I thought it fell off the face of the earth! Yeah, the pushing back is killing the whole thing, I agree. But it is also possible that fall is "the time" for intelligent movies. Although I must say winter is not--before last Saturday, I hadn't seen a good film since The Prestige came out in late October.

What's bugging me (well, there's a list, but hey) is the fact that Fox US can't be bothered to make a place on the spring/summer release slate for "Sunshine" when they're all too eager to theatre-release cookie-cutter sequelitis crap like "AVP 2" (yep, I've got it WAAAAY up my nose for THAT franchise. Loved "Alien," loved "Predator," hated "AVP") that they could release straight-to-effing DVD and no one would EVEN NOTICE because the target audience is just WAITING FOR THE VIDEO GAME.
GAAAAGH--!!!

Without doubt I'm sure it's a grand movie but yeah, it's a bit frustrating. Someone slipped up at US FoxSearchlight and now we're all bothered.

It's NOT December!
OK. I'll tell you. It's the 14th of September. There. I said it...

Also, I have it on very good authority that the decision was made because there are so many big budget 'spectacle' films coming out this spring and summer that an 'intelligent' film like Sunshine has a very good chance of getting lost.
