Hey, I'm just wondering whether they really needed such a big heat shield when they were still relatively far away from the sun's surface/corona. I mean, would the towers have really melted or Kaneda really been killed in his huge suit? Is space, or the radiation of the sun really that intense? I know the Mercury probe had a heat-shield, but it was measly compared to the one in the movie. Granted they had to get totally up and close to the sun, but...someone clue me in here...lol
