Hey, new to the forum and happy to see there are as many people as nutty about this movie as I am! I have just watched 11 times in the last 3 days. Total times watched is somewhere in the 20s.
I am not sure they even broke even with the $40 million budget, but I read a couple of posts about a prequel. Hard to get investors with those kind of numbers for a sequel or prequel. What I would love to see is a re-work of this movie, with no changes to anything but the storyline.
I have not read all the threads and posts, so sorry for any redundancy, but the introduction of Pinbacker as some scorched, crazed villain is where this incredible movie lost it. Seeing as though Boyle has made reference to "2001" as an inspiration, I am not sure why he (and collaborators) felt compelled to add the element of such a destructive character. Sunshine has some of the cerebral feel of "2001", and therefore any type of monster just comes across as gratuitous.
Sunshine is so esthetically pleasing, in sound and vision. Casting is impeccable in chemistry; not to mention the faultless performance from the entire cast. That being said, I really wish that the detour to Icarus 1 would have gone differently as there were more than enough problems for them to deal with. It would have been awesome for them to have to figure out how to continue the mission with the 02 garden destroyed on I2 and the mainframe blown on I1. The mainframe problem could be what stopped I1 (could have just failed instead of being sabotaged). I would have even tolerated a canibalism scenario, if they wanted to add creepy-gory stuff.
Part of the crew could have been left on I1 while I2 attempted to complete mission, with plans for I2 to pick them up on the way back. They would still have to solve the O2 problem on I2 to return to Earth, and the story could still develop the emotion of not being able to get back-this being one of the best accomplishments of the film.
I hope this post provokes some discussion and I am not just beating a dead horse. Don't get me wrong, regardless of this movie's faults, I could watch it non-stop for days! It is not often that a movie ends and I have the feeling that I wish it would just keep going.
