I was just forwarded an email sent out from Fox in LA saying that they are about to start an " aggressive new initiative against content pirates and other consumers that violate our intellectual property rights. As part of this new initiative, all unauthorized content of any length will be removed from user generated content websites. In addition, the group will continuously patrol these sites moving forward for new uploads of copyrighted Fox content and have it taken down. This initiative is starting 4-September-2007. Currently, the sites being monitored will include YouTube, Google Video, Meta Café and Veoh.com." They have also said " If you want any of your content to remain on the monitored websites, you must send me a list of all valid site posting names that you have used and are currently using to post valid promotional content. This must be done by 29-August." Though I am engaged in a conversation with them, I'm not convinced little ole me will be able to change their minds immediately. PLEASE BACK UP ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS ON YOUR COMPUTER. I will let you know what is happening with this.

So... even clips are being taken down? Are they concentrating mainly on just Fox-related vids?

So... even clips are being taken down? Are they concentrating mainly on just Fox-related vids? All they've said is 'all unauthorised content'... I can't begin to tell you how much I think this sucks...

Actually, it makes me want to ask 'em all over for coffee and cookies. I've been reading a very interesting article about intellectual property in Harper's, and I've just about kicked off a letter to dear old Fox based on it. No one I know around here has been acting with anything other than enthusiasm, affection, and admiration for the material in question; no money is changing hands; and before Fox starts crying "Ripoff--!", it would be wise to define "novelty" for its audience-- and itself (for instance, would the company cheerfully countenance a counterclaim of infringement from Paramount under these circumstances? "Event Horizon"'s "burning man" came first, after all.). At the very least, this does nothing for the company's image in terms of good will. Cold move, Fox. But I suppose it's only a logical extension of the studio's non-promotion of the film....

I wrote an email stating that I think punishing fans of films and actors for merely 'sharing the love' is wrong. I doubt I will be listened to though...

"The primary objective of copyright is not to reward the labor of authors but 'to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts.' To this end, copyright assures authors the right to their original expression, but encourages others to build freely upon the ideas and information conveyed by a work. This result is neither unfair nor unfortunate." -- Jonathan Lethem, "The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism," Harper's Magazine, February 2007. Recommended reading-- especially, perhaps, for our twitchy friends at Fox: www.harpers.org/archive/2007/02/0081387

Oh no, I am so scared.
I can't imagine Fox going after hard core fans who paid to see/rent the film and will probably buy both the DVD and HDDVD of the film, who illegally downloaded the soundtrack because they have not created a way to legally provide it to us. Who here wouldn't gladly pay for a non compressed real CD of the music?
