I just saw a TV advert for my most anticipated film of 2008, Cloverfield and what a surprise to hear music from Sunshine!! Anyone hear any other Sunshine music on other movie trailers or adverts yet? www.aintitcool.com/node/35118KP

Not yet, but I am annoyed because they didn't mention Sunshine in the credits as source of the music

Hmm, looks interesting. I wonder if John Murphy is gonna get any cash for THAT movie! Doesn't look like he will for Sunshine! Is it me or have they done away with copyright completely in Hollywood lately? It seems to me anyone can do anything with anyone's music, pass it off as their own and profit by it.

Not quite... trailers are VERY different to actual movies. There's a lot of cross-use of songs in trailers and normally the music in the trailer is attributed to the original creator. I'm not sure why it isn't in this case. Either way they would have had to pay Murphy for use of it in the sequence - one of the many costs for the ad campaign.
This does beg the question, though - if Hollywood can sell the songs to each other for use in adverts, why can't they sell it to normal people?

You're right about the use of music in trailers and tv spots. Everything from pop music to scores for other films can and will be used. Can I ask, though, what you mean by "normally the music ... is attributed to the original creator"? Because, as I'm sure you know, trailers and tv spots don't have credits for themselves. They have credits for the film that they're advertising for, sure, but not for the elements and creators behind the spot. I dunno what to tell you concerning why some music is available within the industry but not to the general public. This isn't an uncommon thing. In trailer houses, and there are all sorts of CDs (or just digital copies) of music that isn't available to the public at all. Sometimes it's versions/copies of scores and other music that is available in other forms to the public. A lot of CDs are sent to houses for promotion within the industry and for that reason alone. There are a lot of good musical treasures hidden in the many creative advertising houses of the film industry. It's a bummer, but what can you do.
