*Searle could be from Hawaii with those dolls... *Harvey could be very religious during the mission? *Capa must be single if he has a photo of only his dog... gosh I hope I'm right!

There were very detailed backstories written for each of the characters. They were written to provide the actors with 'motivation', but very little of the details come out directly in the film. The set decorators studied the character backstories which helped them to create believable sets. And sometimes they just put random, quirky things on set. There are more photos of these things here...

Oh, I forgot about those! Thanks for the link.
Question: The "family photos" are really pictures of the Sunshine crew or am I only hallucinating?

The people in photo 3 of that essay are indeed a few members of the Sunshine production team. The people in photo 1 (in Cassie's room) *aren't* members of production... there are quite a lot of photos of people on set, but not all of them are of people from production. Actually, my husband gave Cillian lots of calculations which Cillian re-wrote in his own handwriting which were then pinned up on Capa's bedroom wall...
There is going to be a video on the DVD (not online unfortunately) which is about one element of one of the character's backstories, what one of the set dressers did about it... and how it affected that actor's performance... It's very moving...

I was watching an extra feature on the DVD of The Family Stone, and this just made me think of it. There's just so, so much that goes into making a film, and I love that most of the people who see this won't even realize anything that has been mentioned just in this thread. They'll have no idea that the calculations were re-written or that the people in some photographs are members of the crew or anything. It's so fascinating!

Here's another funny one: In the third photo in this post - the serial number- it has the (misspelled!) name of Sunshine's Production Designer Mark Tildesley. I saw that on one piece of equipment in Searle's Lab...

Oh my! If there's any similiar "bloopers" like that hidden among your Sunshine blog, Gia, maybe you should make a thread about it under About Sunshine or something. That's just so interesting to point out. It's funny and relative at the same time. My real name is unique and I've seen it misspelled many times. LOL
