I come from a Jewish background, so it struck me as I was reading through the Bible that the idea of sacrifice could be compared with the Icarus mission. In Hebrew, the animal/grain offering is called korban and it means drawing near to God. It's a way for people to strike up a connection. I thought how similar it was in Sunshine that humans were bringing a sort of ultimate sacrifice, the sum fissile materials from Earth (I didn't say it was a normal sacrifice ) straight to 'God'. Whilst there's no indication that the Sun going out was a punishment for humanity's sins, I should note that sacrifices weren't always atonement for sin. They could just as easily be used to thank God. And in other religions, sacrifices sometimes were a way to nourish, feed and support God. But this is just my interpretation: Maybe, just maybe the Sunshine world has sort of lost its way and given up religion. The Sun is going out, but it's not exactly a punishment. It's a trial. It's probably humanity's greatest trial ever. And if the human race can rise up and met his/her creator, to meet Him face to face and deliver a sacrifice of 'atonement' or an affirmation of faith, it starts back up again.
