I just can`t agree with people that are saying SUNSHINE was a disaster at the box office. If you check Sunshine`s page on Box Office Mojo ( www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=sunshine06.htm) you can see the movie was released in US only in 461 theatres. I`ll never understand why. It made 3.6 mil $ and for that limited theaters that`s good but let`s imagine: if the movie had been released in 3000-3500 theaters or so it had to do like 30-35 mil $. Anyway as you can see the foreign box office grosses were better (~ 28 mil. $) Also, the DVD rentals since January 2008 was ~ 20 mil. $. According to IMDB, the budget for this movie was 50 mil. $ I don`t think there will be a prequel/sequel to this one and I have the feeling that it was made in a way to remain a classic in the history of SF movies. And it did. But who knows... Meanwhile we should enjoy every second of "Sunshine" that`s a rare gem.

Sunshine cost 20 million pounds, that are ~40 million dollars. With all sold DVDs and theater gains there might be a bad balance. Sunshine isn't that kind of just-profit-making mainstream blockbuster. I doubt Fox could have made Sunshine extrem popular by advertisement. Though a real mistake was that Fox didn't reach all scfi-fans or people who are interested in such movies.
A sequel is unnecessary because the story doesen't allows it. The sun were reignited, the mission succeeded, the tale finished. Besides, the commericial success of the movie wasn't stunning like you said. I gather that Danny Boyle never calculated it and I am sure that it couldn't be as great as Sunshine. Most not-calculated pre/se-quels of successful movies dont't reach the original, look at Matrix or the Star Wars prequels.

You`re right, but remember that in US "Sunshine" was released only limited in ~ 461 theatres and usually movies are released in 3000-3500 theatres, that`s why the final grosses of them are so big. I still don`t understand why this movie wasn`t released wide in the US As for the final balance of the movie I`d say it made worldwide with DVD rentals ~ 50 mil $, not that bad. I woudn`t say that a sequel/prequel is not necessary. I mean it could be made for the fans, even a straight to DVD release. There are solutions. Always. For example, no one thought about a possible Alien 3 sequel but in Alien Ressurection - Ripley was cloned and so on...
