First of all: You deserve a LY for that.
Sputnik sounds acutally similar like Icarus, but the sound of Icarus is more regular and the beeps aren't so loud. But the basic tone seems to be the same. Hm, If they took the sound of Sputnik, why they had changed it so much?

well thanks.
I dunno, maybe a sound engineer was researching the noises of space travel, liked the sound of Sputnik and was inspired to create a new clip for use in the film since the recording from 50 years ago is too raspy and low quality.
I imagine it works on a subconscious level for many viewers since they remember hearing Sputnik as a child and associate that sound with space travel. Using that sound would make the film feel more realistic for people even if they don't consciously recognize the sound.

If you are a reader of the SunshineDNA blog, there is an entry titled Telemetry which mentions Editor Chris Gill actually using the sound of Sputnik (right-click and save as) in a scene. The entry also mentions first-hand experience on the set interacting with the edit team and special crew members. It's a must-read!
