Wondering: What if Kaneda had taken the more traditional captain's route and sent Harvey and Mace out to fix the shields...? Mace could still get in his "I volunteer Capa" dig, and Kaneda would veto it, reminding Mace of Capa's critical importance to the mission (and embarrassing Capa in the process). Mace gives Capa a contemptuous sneer as he and Harvey suit up. Capa feels like killing Mace; he also feels about *this* *big*. As Mace and Harvey head out, Cassie tells Capa to forget about it: not only does Mace tend to run his mouth, but he and Harvey are best trained to perform the repairs. Then, outside, Harvey sees the vastness of things and gets spooked. As Icarus takes control of the ship, and swings the shield back, they have "X" amount of time to complete the repairs, if he and Mace both keep at it. But Harvey thinks their time insufficient. He panics and bolts for the airlock, leaving Mace to complete the job. Mace keeps working, knowing he doesn't have enough time on his own to complete the repairs and get back. But he stays on task, finishes-- and is burned alive. (With apologies to Massiefan...! ) SO... just thinking. We'd have Harvey trying to live with his cowardice, Capa unconvinced that he's all the man he could be, and Kaneda still alive... for the time being, anyway.... Thoughts?

*edit*I think I accidentally clicked the fire smiley O.o*/edit*
It would make more sense for them not to send the two most important crew members, yeah. My first thought is that they'd have a big problem without Mace if Pinbacker raises the computer out of the coolant. Then again, Harvey could probably act out Mace's role provided he's not skiddish of cold water. But what about the airlock scene? I guess somebody would still have to die there. Still Harvey?

Then again, Kaneda would have killed Pinbacker before any sabotaging could've taken place.

My thoughts are if that scene happened, Kaneda (heck, everyone!) would most probably HATE Harvey even more. I mean, everyone gonna (if they havent already) judge him that he's not "second-in-command" material. And if they get to Icarus I after that, I'm thinking Harvey wont get to go (something like suspended) Cassie will HATE him (all the obvious reasons) Kaneda is going to be annoyed cause that he's such a chicken (not Trey) Trey's gonna hate him too cause Mace and Trey are quite good friends the way I see it Corazon's gonna hate him too cause he's being such a baby and she's gonna miss rolling her eyes at Mace. Capa's gonna hate him cause thanks to Harvey, there aint no Mapa fights anymore. Searle is probably neutral but maybe he's gonna drugged him or sentenced him to a week or so in the Earth Room So basically he's gonna get EVEN MORE lonely which is gonna make him miss his wife more HENCE leading into MAJOR Depression whereby he may have suicidal thoughts in which Searle's gonna drug him EVEN MORE the way he drug Trey. And yea, in Icarus I, that hott-and-ever-so-capable Kaneda's gonna hunt Pinbacker down and KILL him! OR Kaneda's gonna find Pinbacker and asks him all about Icarus I (what happened and "why on space arent you wearing any clothes!" questions) whereby Pinbacker's gonna stick a dagger or something on him (the same way he did to Corazon except it's from the front) and Corazon's gonna go freaked out far more dramatically and emotionally than the "fire-in-oxygen-garden" scene and start banging on the Airlock door and use all her Pilates-Judo-Karate-etc-etc-etc and beat the daylights out of him. But before he dies, Searle's gonna pull him aside and ask "WHAT DID YOU SEE?!!!!" which he may or may not answer "Whitby" and they're gonna say "woot?" but he dont have the strength to answer them. Trey's gonna go all "I f--ked up" again and possibly join Harvey together in the Earth Room. Capa's gonna be stunned that Kaneda's dying but vows to complete the mission before his last breath. Cassie's probably gonna be wailing cause she still havent recover from Mace's death, such impact may cause her to join Trey and Harvey. Corazon's gonna have the same look she have (after the garden was gone in the Social Area) and join Cassie, Trey and Harvey. Searle might get a little too busy attending to all 4 psychos seriously depressed crew. So Capa's the only one left to drive the ship, do repairs, do the calculations, take care of the oxygen garden. Which will lead him to insanity because let's face it, there's only so much one smart guy can do. SO... it's gonna end up, 2 dead, 5 wackos, and 1 very-busy doctor. AND guess who ends up saving earth? Our beloved she's-so-darn-smart-you-cant-believe-she's-just-a-mainframe If you have managed to read it all til here without 1. falling asleep 2. rolling your eyes 3. rubbing your eyes 4. laughing congratulations you are indeed ABNORMAL...

Hey, I'm ABNORMAL! WHOO HOO!
(Uh, big surprise THERE! ;D)
So... Kaneda might end up leading the expedition to the Icarus I. There, I might let him steal one of Capa's later scenes by having him-- that is, Kaneda-- run right smack into Pinbacker. Horrified realization on Kaneda's part-- only, unlike Capa, he doesn't whimper a few "My God"s and turn and run. Takes his slashing and then some, and then, by the time he realizes he ought to warn his crew, it's too late. He's mortally wounded, and Pinbacker has his comm link. (Can just see Pinbacker holding it like a trophy while Kaneda goes dizzy from loss of blood and collapses.) Cue villainous line: "Your mission is over; your ship is mine."-- or something like that.
Whoa-- since Harvey didn't make the trip, maybe Corazon went instead, to check out the Oxygen Garden on the Icarus I. She and Capa and Searle get Cassie's message to return to the Icarus II as soon as possible-- and, on her way to the airlock, she goes right past Kaneda without seeing him in the dark. He tries to call to her, but he's too weak. He dies without warning his crew about Pinbacker.
Two things, then: either Corazon refuses to make the jump back, or Searle insists that she go. He tells her he'll find Kaneda; the captain is resourceful; he and Searle will find a way back. And Kaneda would want her to go.
She and Capa make the jump back to the Icarus II-- if only because I'd really want an exchange similar to the following at the "voting scene":
Pause as they realize someone has to die. Then Corazon looks coldly at Harvey: "Why don't you make yourself useful for once?"
Harvey goes pale. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
Her garden is dead; Kaneda is lost; the rest of them are dying. Corazon isn't exactly brimming with compassion at this point. "You know exactly what that means." She stares at him until Harvey looks away....

Kill off their desperately needed voice of reason just because...? No way, massiefan! I was just opening up a more traditional chain-of-command scenario. Sorry for the upset!

Tha's okay. I heard a quote about the chain of command from Firefly the other day that just SCREAMED Mace:
You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with until you realize who's in command here!
I think it was Jayne that said that.
