yea... all through the movie, I was thinking although he's not officially the captain, but he was on a relatively clear mind throughout the craziest times...

I think Mace should've been second in command. Well, it felt like he was Captain all through the film anyway so...Hehe.

I would say Mace is a "control freak." He wanted to make sure everything was working fine and had all the 'bright' ideas as far as survival went. Yeah, he would be a good captain after Kaneda... but nothing beats the real thing.

I think if you're military, at the level where they'd send you into space, rather than just a take-orders-fire-bullets soldier, you'd have to know your own abilities and limits pretty darn well. I get that feeling from all of them, to be honest, even Harvey in the beginning. Ultimately they were all chosen for this mission for a reason, and the bottom line is that any one of them might have had to carry it forward to the conclusion. Capa was initially something of a risk, because (one presumes) although he's had similar mission training to them all, he hasn't had the experiences and years of training the others will have. I think that's a part of the reason for the tension between him and Mace; Mace sees him as a bit of a baby and perhaps doesn't really think he should be there. Capa has a lot to prove.

Yeah I agree. I think the other part of the tension between them, however, is Cassie. *in my overactive imagination* Sorry. Athough Mace was very vocal about his intentions and decisions and could be, at times, downright annoying, I would have gone with his decision to not go to Icarus 1. I wouldn't have risked the ship and one payload we already had. Hunches would not be enough for me to risk them. But that's just me. "Curiousity killed the cat", as the saying goes". I don't know. *shrugs* :/

Curiousity may have killed the cat BUT satisfaction bring it back!

Of course, in the book they're talking about "losing the world" to a sort of epidemic caused by blindness and walking, carnivorous plants (creepy!), but it's the same general idea. Day of the Triffids, par chance?

Yep, Day of the Triffids! I'd originally listened to it on "book on tape" because it was all my local library had, but on the trip to London to see the film I had the actual book. xP

I admit, if I was on the ship, I would have chosen to head over to the first ship too. Not wise, but I would have thought it to be. I guess maybe because I'm a bit like Cassie. Wanting not only to have the first payload but wants to see if the former crew members were safe as well.
