Browsing through the very hostile IMDB Sunshine page and I found this:

Anyone else find this moment funny?
Crew is sitting around discussing whether to take Trey's life, Cassie votes no, tensions are high... Mace rises, having decided to do it. "Make it easy for him, somehow", she says softly.
SMASH CUT to him picking up the biggest, most brutal looking spinning scalpel torture instrument you can imagine.
I thought this was a brilliant movie, but I let out a totally inappropriate laugh at that. In a medical ward full of painkillers and antidepressants, the most humane way he can come up with to kill his colleague and friend is STABBING him to death with a scalpel!?

Simple. Mace had stated: "That's between me and Trey" when asked how he was going to "do it". More than likely, Mace was planning to confront Trey verbally about it, probably bluntly stating in a very Mace-like way that "you're going to have to take one for the team." Trey might not have been too happy about this, and might have reacted violently out of self protection -- so perhaps Mace was NOT picking up the scalpel to kill Trey outright, but to protect himself. But we'll never know because Trey slit his wrists. basil78 needs to drop this excerise in futility...but then again, he's an IMDB "critic", and that ain't sayin' much for his credibility.

To me, I think Mace chose that, whether or not to kill or to protect (sounds like Transformers doesnt it...), is because he's from military background. He's protoganist (works with his hands), so to say, he feels more comfortable with these than with drugs or whatever...

"stabbing till death sounds nasty"
--> I agree. They should have tried to find something from Searle's medical stash if they could find something to make the death a little easier.

Well.. if Mace had picked up anything else, then we wouldn't have seen the missing scalpel.. seeing that really adds a little tension to the film, cause you notice there's a scalpel missing, and you don't know who took it.. It's not a big deal anyway.. but you know something's about to go wrong And well.. Mace could have taken it to protect himself from Trey.. in case he freaked out

There's another funny comment about Pinbacker and the fact he ran around all burnt and insane for years...without pants

lethal shot could've been beter solution or shot in the head stabbing till death sounds nasty They hadn't any guns and that's absolutly right. The best solution would be to let him alive. But I think Mace wants to kill Trey as fast as possible, so why should he take a small scalpell? It's not easier with a small one. A fast stab into heart would be enough
