If you carefully watch the scene where the communication tower was destroyed, it kept throwing off sparks as it continued to rotate around the ship. Some sparks just happened to fall near the Oxygen Garden, and the high O2 content there helped contribute to the resulting explosion. I hope this helps.

According to the script:
"And we see that now, as the gravity centrifuge of the ship turns...
...light reflected off the damaged comms tower is striking the mirrored glass of the Oxygen Garden portal.
And each time it does so, beneath the portal, the plants are bathed in bleaching light."

The oxygen garden rotates around the ship? It's a centrifuge to create gravity? This doesnt make sense because they had gravity in not-rotating parts of the ship, too.

Like Neiru said.
It's subtle but the film does show light reflecting off the communications boom and hitting the side of the ship where the garden is located. At such close range to the Sun (even a dying Sun), light intensity would be astronomical. Even the slightest reflection of it would act like a super laser.
But, you know, this might set up a technical goof in the film:
Remember when Icarus II links up with Icarus I by overlapping their shields? Light is shown reflecting off the shield of one of the ships and hitting the back side of the shield of the other ship.
So why didn't the other ship's metal immediately start to be vaporized?
