Am I the only one who didn't know about this? In Greek mythology, Icarus was son of Daedalus, famous for his death by falling into the sea when he flew too close to the sun, melting the wax holding his artificial wings together.I got that from Wikipedia, but only after I read this in my book ( The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, if anyone's interested, xP): "No way. I am convinced that I would time travel and Lord knows if I would be able to get back to something flying 350 miles an hour. I'd end up falling out the sky à la Icarus." ...I'm getting a little obsessed, guys.

1. Heh, of course I didn't know that either. 2. If you weren't a little obsessed I still wouldn't have known this... yah...

Too bad the United States pegged "Apollo" for the moon program (which far more logically should have been the "Artemis" program): that name would've been slightly less ominous for a sun-bound ship than "Icarus"! Maybe "Phoebus"-- the "radiant one"-- would be good alternative. Or "Daedalus"-- at least he had the sense to stay home!
Personally-- I would prefer *not* to be on a ship named Icarus heading straight for the sun....

Well one would hope that the ship is not made of feathers and wax... :-)
More on Icarus but most likely not relevant in any way to our film: Daedalus was the fellow who built the labyrinth for King Minos. And he's the one who also revealed the secret to defeating the minotaur. So he and Icarus were punished and put into the Labyrinth. He had made the wings for himself and Icarus to escape.

Ominous foreshadowing, ne?

This is one of my favourite 'Icarus' paintings. It's Lament for Icarus by Herbert Draper and is at the Tate Britain.

That's one beautiful painting, Gia, thanks for sharing! ;D But am I the only who always thinks "They couldn't have made wings like that in prison"? Haha ^^;;;;
