So I just had a semi religious experience watching Sunshine for the first time tonight. I came home, read about it on Wikipedia, talked to a few friends that have seen it, and then joined this forum.
Perhaps religious is a bad word to use - it was more of an awakening, or re-awakening if you will (not to sound all New Agey - not what I am going for!)
I have always held a strong belief in science and humanism, but thanks to Boyle he basically put those beliefs into a beautiful cinematic masterpiece that had a great story line to boot!
I feel pumped up and awed at the same time! I know this is a bit of an over reaction but what better place then a forum about the movie to type it out at!
I'm Ben by the way - student in the US.. nice to meet you all!

An overreaction?! You should see how it rocked my world! I mean, besides bringing me back to the core of my spirituality, I'm now studying physics again, learning calculus, reading astronomy books, buying Icarus crew patches off eBay, writing essays, watching every Cillian Murphy movie I can get my hands on - it's horrible!

Thats awesome!
If you don't mind me asking how old are you? You said you are studying physics again so I assume you are a student. Do you want to be an astronomer because of this movie? More details plz!

Welcome to the fanboards Ben! Where overreactions are not overreactions at all!

If you don't mind me asking how old are you? You said you are studying physics again so I assume you are a student. Do you want to be an astronomer because of this movie? More details plz! I'm 26. I already graduated college with a Psychology B.A. (gee, that was useless), which I originally picked so that I can go into parapsychology. But I ended up hating regular Psychology (kinda boring, and don't think mainstream psychology really covers human potential) and realized taht if I wanted to do parapsychology research I'd have to go through the tedious approval and grant process that oftentimes doesn't go anywhere, and then be stuck doing experiements that will likely not yield much results because I don't think humans are at a point where they can measure or even test these things. If I go back for a Psychology-related graduate degree it will be in Anthropology. There are several fields that I'd be interested as a career, though, and Astronomy/Astrophysics/Astrobiology is one (three? ^^; ) of them. In college I tied for second highest grade on my Astronomy final and wrote a 20 page paper on black holes to upgrade my credit to an honors course. In general I'm disillusioned with the school system, as it has achieved nothing but teach me how closed-minded mainstream science is to new ideas (which have always been the lifeblood of expanding knowledge) and killed my initiative to learn. I consider myself a self-learner, so when I say I'm studying something, I mean I'm reading books. Right now I got 2 books by Stephen Hawking, a couple on quantum physics, a bunch on astronomy/astrobiology, and a self-teaching calculus book lined up to re/read. Still, I am now looking more closely at the subfields of astronomy and cosmology to see if I can find a place there that would give me the freedom to research what I want. Ideally that would be black holes, the beginning/structure/future of the universe, and how the erratic behavior of things on the quantum level can be translated into macroscopic scales.

There's a book about the whole school system thing and how it crushes individualism and the will to succeed. -The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life - By Grace Llewellyn and it's not just for teenagers.. she used to be a teacher, so it's kinda direced toward her younger audiences, but the message is still the same wether you're 16 or 116
