A handful of weeks back, before the soundtrack was officially released, I dropped a note to John Murphy. A few days ago, much to my delight, he responded! I asked if he might be willing to stop by the board and say-- or write-- a few words; he has very kindly agreed.
So here's the deal: Do you have any questions for John Murphy regarding the soundtrack to "Sunshine"? (I know I do!) I thought we might open this thread with a month-long period in which we can ask questions, and Mr. Murphy can post in at his leisure with replies.
I'll lead off:
A general question: Whom do you count among your major musical influences?

I have a few questions if I am not too late-
I downloaded the Itunes version and will get the CD if there is one, is there going to be anything different on the CD if it does come out?
Are you working on any projects right now?
Who are your favorite musicians or bands (who do you listen to?)
How do you get to work on movies? Do you 'try out' or do the producers contact you and say 'go to it!!'
What types of films do you prefer composing for?
Is there a film or type of film you would want to do?
Would you do more television?
Your music on the Sunshine Soundtrack was very important and inspirational for me. During a very trying time last year when my daughter was born premature I was listening to your music and it helped me (especially the track Sunshine Adagio in D Minor). I can't explain it but I felt it matched my feeling of her growing and eventually being discharged from the hospital in a very healthy state. When I hear the music I visualize the movie but I also can visualize her overcoming her prematurity. What inspires you when composing or working with music?
Thanks for your time

What was your inspiration for the track: The Surface Of The Sun?
What's your favorite genre of film to compose for? SciFi (Sunshine), Horror/suspense (28 Days Later), etc? and from the one your choose why that genre?
My absolute favorite piece from your work is "In the house in a Heartbeat" what inspired that?

What about the one or two or three of us primates who've chosen not to register for a myspace account...?
Just wondering.
Thanks for defusing the thread, man.
I'll shut up now.

My questions are already on the table, but here are some more: ------------------------
What draws you into a project: people or subject matter or both? Why?
How is it like working with Danny Boyle?
What does 'Sunshine' mean to you?
You've noted that 'Mercury' is your favorite JM/Underworld collaboration. What is your overall favorite track on the iTunes release and why? (If it is still 'Mercury', what is your second favorite and why?)
Which track on the iTunes release was the most difficult to create and why?
How was it like working with Karl Hyde and Rick Smith of Underworld?

A couple more--
1. Noting the use of "third-party" music on the soundtracks to "Sunshine" and "28 Days Later," and thinking particularly of the extremely beautiful "An Ending (Ascent)," by Brian Eno, in "28 Days Later," and "Avenue of Hope," by I Am Kloot, in "Sunshine":
Who chose those tracks, and how was their placement determined?
Were alternate tracks considered and rejected?
2. Can you comment on the lovely (and, as far as I my old ears can hear, unreleased) track "Elegy," from "Sunshine"? Did you compose it for a scene that was cut from the film's final print? If so-- and this is likely asking a lot-- then what did that scene entail?

Question for members: Should we ask about royalties? And how about that music arrangement debate regarding the OST music vs. actual film music?
