Since i've purchased dvd of Sunshine and so seen Cut Scenes, i was wondering bout the prime importance of the Chess Game within the movie and finally as an allegory of future Kaneda's Death or Checkmate.
During the first cut scene, we see Capa & Kaneda playing chess, the last one conceding victory after Capa's brilliant moves, laying his King on its side and shaking (after a brief hesitation) Capa's hand.
Then after Capa & Mace fight, when Mace is turning over at the camera, knowing Kaneda is watching him, the captain is sitting in front of his Chess Game board and he's playing with the White King.
During the famous and dramatic scene when Kan decide to sacrifice himself in order to save Capa, the crew, Icarus II and the payload, he suddenly turning over, facing at the coming heat wave in a great tracking back. At this point, the Shield is looking like a giant Chess game board with Capa as the White King and Kaneda as the White Queen, or mayhaps the White Knight. He sacrificed himself as he would have sacrifice a piece trying to dodge Checkmate. (I even think the two lampposts could be an metaphor of Tower or Bishop)
The White King appears once more during the cut scene between Capa & Searle within the Bomb.
I dunno if i'm right about it, but i think Danny Boyle scattered a lotta "small details" like this one all along the movie.
A friend of mine (another huge fan of Sunshine) told me that the form within the heat wave (as Kaneda is still repairing the last panel) is looking like a "white lotus" as Kaneda is a buddhist, it would explain why he's so mesmerized.

The knight repesents an aspect of the movie that had been discussed a lot: The imagination of Kaneda as a symbol for the lack of leadership in the film after his death. The chess game is the first chapter of that story, it connects him with the knight. A really fascinating subplot and integrated in the fabric of the movie in a brilliant way. I guess Danny Boyle cut it off because it is too sopisticated for the most people and it is just a not-essential-for-the-understanding-of-the-movie-game. The equation shield-chess game is very intersting and new in my opinion becuase it reflects the whole stuff in a big scale, a comparision between the smallest and the bigest, a new dimension were brought in the movie that showed how important Kaneda was. His death was the beginning of the end. LY had been transmitted
