I could never hope to learn all of the words in the English dictionary. Do you ever think that perhaps some words are unnecessary? We have so many different words that mean the same thing.
Anyways, I stumbled upon a new word today and it reminded me of Sunshine, in particular Danny Boyle and Michelle Yeoh, so I just had to mention it here. How this thread works is that each post should contain at least ONE weird/unique/unpopular word and its definition. I only have one to share for right now, but you can have as many as you can find (and they don't need to relate to Sunshine [this is posted under the Miscellaneous category afterall]).
defenestrate: To throw out of a window.

"Defenestrate" is a really fun word. I think the root must be on loan from "Fenster," the German word for "window." In the DC comic book Hitman, there was even a third-string superhero called The Defenestrator: he went around with a windowframe through which he was more than happy to toss hapless evildoers. (Almost seems like something you could safely say to a somewhat dim ex-in-the-making, too: "I defenestrated your TV and most of your clothes, sweetie."/"Oh-- uh, thanks, honey.") Oh, dear.... I like " obfuscatory" and its compatriots " obfuscation" and " obfuscate." "Dark[ened]," "obscure"; the process of making obscure or dark; making obscure or dark. Cool stumblers, those: they sound like what they are!

If you can keep these two straight, you're doing better than a good percentage of the judges out there! Two from The Pit:
spoliation (not spoilation): "plundering"-- but also, as used in a legal context, destruction of evidence necessary for trial
parol (not parole): "word of mouth"-- legally, referring to something outside the four corners of a contract: an unwritten, supposedly agreed-upon term or clause

cachinnate (KAK-uh-nayt)
To laugh loudly and boisterously; to guffaw.
This word is from Latin cachinnare, meaning "to laugh loudly," and is probably onomatopoetic.
"I have a feeling that the authors of that new book that says you can lose weight by sleeping more are going to be cachinnating all the way to the bank."
