Any Browncoats around here? ^^ Well even if not...
This show is wonderful! Despite lasting less than a season, it had the makings of greatness: witty spaceship crew pick up two fugitive passengers and do shady dealings while mysterious things (and the all-powerful omni-government Alliance) pursue them. Little do they know about the conspiracy... It certainly helps us that Joss "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Whedon wrote it, but sadly, it was cancelled.
However.
The rest of the story is told in the movie Serenity. So go watch it. ;D

I adored Firefly. I tend to get hooked on shows that get cancelled in their first season. I thought the film Serenity worked better for people who didn't know much about the show. I liked about half the film, but the series rocked.

I thought the basic story worked fine, but I don't think that the characters were all treated kindly.
Summer, Nathan, and Gina all did a great job and the film stayed true to their characters.
Alan, Ron, and Sean did okay-I actually like Sean more in the film than in the series (and I did figure they would kill off Sean-Alan hurt, though).
Adam's character was all over the place.
Morena was really unnecessary. I loved that she was in the film, but she just wasn't given much of a part.
Jewel was my biggest problem. I really liked her in the series, but they took away most of her charm and gave her smuttier lines in the film.
The friend I saw the film with had never seen the series and thought the film was okay.

Yeah, I saw the film first and went "What?" when they showed Ron and later Morena. It would have been so much better had they both been given better development since Book died. u.u (I wasn't sad at first because I had no idea what happened! o.O) Especially because the show leads you to think that something will happen between Mal and Inara...but no. Anyway, I liked Kaylee's smutty lines, they had character, and she said plenty of smutty or at least near-smutty stuff in the show. But yeah, it wasn't as good as the series just because it was rushed, but I love it all the same. Albeit poor Wash! T^T

Well I'm glad my favorite Sci-Fi show of all time got mentioned! This is one part of the reason why I hate FOX, the others are the cancelations of Wonderfalls and Drive and the fact that Bill O'Reilly is allowed to talk for an hour. I'm such a browncoat I even went dressed as a Browncoat to Sakuracon, an Anime convention. I figured it was close enough!

Another Browncoat here! I have Firefly on DVD and also Serenity, and I am a terrible Jayne/Kaylee shipper. Mostly cause Simon annoys the c[r]ap out of me. River is cool though, and I love Wash. I cried when you-know-what happened in Serenity. Speaking of it only having one season, there's a site you can go to in order to agree to this online petition to make a second season! I think the link is: www.fireflyseason2.comFollow the prompts, people!

Gorram straight I'm a Browncoat!
My wife and I both are, and we watch the DVD's religiously.
Kaylee is an adorable riot, and Jayne Cobb is the ultimate anti-hero (Adam Baldwin [Jayne] was also top-notch as the M60-wielding "Animal Mother" in Full Metal Jacket -- he was channeling Jayne's attitude years in advance!).
Serenity was a bit of a letdown for me, though. Don't know why, really. I guess it was a bit over the top compared to the series.

I've been a fan of Firefly for a long, long time now. I keep my hopes up for a second season. You think the cult following the show's gained Fox would have renewed a second season. I mean if Family Guy can do it, I'm sure this could. Then again you have to be realistic about this ad just be content with what was made.

I adore Firefly! ^o^ River is my favorite character, but Wash and Kaylee are close behind Nathan is by far the funniest actor I know of And sadly I was a late fan, so once I got into it the movie was going to DVD and I found out there was not going to be anymore of the series *pout*

I think the reason the movie is perhaps not as adored as the series is because Whedon sort of abandoned some of the ideals of the series and toned it down for a more general audience. The western aspect was virtually ignored and Mal's taking on the task of revealing the secret of Miranda seemed out of character.
The fate of a couple of characters was probably not something that endeared the movie to many fans either.
I agree with Joss's move to try to make a movie that more people would want to see, that way you lure them into seeing it and when they like it, that's when you can reveal the more rough parts of the show that may turn people away. The series did not appeal to anyone to start with and it wasn't until word of mouth and the DVD release that most people came on board and said "WOW, this series is really good."
If the movie was a massive success then Whedon would have been able to bring back some of this elements in future movies and series as he would now have his larger audience.
