I'm not a big Sci-Fi movie fan, but this is probably stands out for me as one of the greatest. It takes few times of watch to really understand what is going on there but it's worth it. Kubrick was an amazing and unique director and he did an amazing job on this movie so early on his career. MUST SEE !!!

It is but there is more to it. here is a summer of the plot from imdb: "When the world is ruled by apes, one particular group discovers a mysterious rectangular monolith near their home, which imparts upon them the knowledge of tool use, and enables them to evolve into men. In the year 2001, a similar monolith is discovered on the moon, and is determined to have come from an area near Jupiter. Astronaut David Bowman, along with four companions, sets off for Jupiter on a spaceship controlled by HAL 9000, a revolutionary computer system that is every bit mankind's equal, and perhaps his superior. When HAL endangers the crew's lives for the sake of the mission, Bowman will have to first overcome the computer, then travel to the birthplace of the monolith, where whatever alien intelligence controls them decides that humanity is ready to take the next evolutionary step..."

I've heard SO many good reviews on this movie. It sounds like a classic to me. It's a shame I haven't seen it yet. That's my next "mission" after 28 Days Later for sure. Thanks for the summary, mici!

You haven't seen 28 Days Later yet? oh you going to love it . many people think it's another one of those zombi movies but it's not, again so much more to it as always with Danny Boyle's wonderful movies. You most welcome .

One of the most brilliant movie-music moments of all time: Kubrick scuttling the original score and using "The Blue Danube" over the shuttle-docking sequence in "2001." Whenever I see that scene, I just stop whatever I'm doing and stand transfixed.... Beautiful!
And the most realistic use of sound-- EVER-- in a space film: Kubrick bringing the sound up gradually, corresponding to the re-pressurization of the airlock, when Dave-- whom HAL has locked out of the ship-- lets himself back in. WOW.

This is really a perfect combination between movie and music. Kubrick is known for that, most of his movies are perfectly combined with sound and color, every little detail is significant.

2001 is probably the most incredibly fascinating sci-fi's ever made or I've ever seen, I can't believe I didn't put this on my top ten! Just an oversight, bc I never tire of watching, the creepiness is subtle but haunting, the music is perfect, and the tone set by the slow unending shots stand my hair on end every time.
