Hey, Fox, let's not miss a single opportunity to DROP THE BALL with this sucker, shall we...? Yeah, you are right^^ But I think the reason for this attitude of FOX is that Sunshine is not mainstream and people who like this kind of movies are rarely. And just this people like Sunshine and buy the DVD. So FOX doesn't care about advertisement and good selling strategies just because Sunshine is not mainstream! At the other hand that is one of the reasons why we love Sunshine (it's separated from the boring mainstream). But you US-guys could order the DVD from GB, it's actually the same like the US-Version isn't it?

The GB version is identical, I'm sure, to the US version but the region kills many Americans simply because they don't want to invest in a region-free DVD player. I will never understand the purpose for DVD regions. Ever.

Yeah-- It was a little different when we were dealing with just the idea of one video format versus another (PAL versus NTSC-- and even that was-- and is-- pretty darn silly), but all the multi-region thing does is open the door even wider for piracy. Maybe the powers that be are thinking that all will be settled when the HD/Blu-Ray war concludes: most of those new hi-def players will handle anything. Of course, those of us who don't want to spend a kajillion dollars buying a new A/V system and then learning the ways of magic and zen to wire the dang thing will be left in the dark, but, hey, there'll still be eBay and those delightfully omnivorous eighty-buck Toshibas....
As for "Sunshine" being a no-sell 'cause of its indie-ness, plenty of big chains are now bragging up the fact that they're carrying "small-market" DVDs. The Niece, a longtime employee of Target, was having a chuckle the other day over having to stock "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" next to "The Dead Girl" on her store's indie cap....

I wonder if Fox Spotlight was/is pissed at Boyle for the budget overruns and production delays associated with the movie. Could this explain why FS has done so little to promote this flick? I mean why not release this movie before Christmas? Maybe they ae only releasing the DVD in the US because they are contractually obligated to do so. Who knows. It's just that FS has made so many curious moves to make sure this movie didn't get the publicity it deserved, that it becomes suspicious after a while. Another example is when they made all the death scenes available online. Why would a studio do that if not to screw the director?
Anyway, can't wait for 1/8/08; No word on a hi-def release? This is the one movie that might see me buying a BD player to go with my HD DVD player.

Sadly, I think it's just the way Fox Searchlight deals with certain films... Here's a post from Horrorshow on the official Day Watch Blog message board:

...For some reason, this scenario reminds me of something I read about a while ago, where Disney stymied the development of "Tron" centuries ago in '82 just to try and sabotage a movie created by an animator that left Disney ( "The Secret of NIMH", if I remember that article correctly)... Because of that, "Tron" was never given the chance to achieve its full potential. <sigh> Ironic what studios will do to protect their own 'interests'...although I'm wondering exactly how Fox thought that virtually suppressing "Sunshine" would end up helping them in the long run...I'd like to know just how long it will take them to realize (if ever) that (like <Horrorshow> said) they've lost a lot of money and fans because of their short-sightedness and stupidity. ... Tch...forgive my annoyed rant...just felt that I needed to sound off on this... : What needs to be done to the heads of Fox...but that's just my own personal opinion, btw.

If nothing else, it's a lousy business decision: the film lost money during its theatrical run (it looks like the final box-office tally will be something like $32 million dollars, and conventional filmmaking wisdom says you have to make three times your production costs to break even ["Sunshine" cost something like $50 million to make]), so a strong DVD push could certainly have dumped more dough in Fox's box-office-deprived coffers.
I'm wondering how much-- if any-- of "Sunshine"'s funding came from lottery sources. That is, Fox's lack of interest in terms of marketing may (or may not: again, I'm not sure) reflect the fact that the studio actually invested very little of its own money in the project.
Hmmm....

DVD regions suck but they were implemented as a way tocontrol content, sales, etc in particular regions. And if you ever look at a DVD region map it's like "WTF??" Also in the case if for example a movie gets put out on DVD before it hits cinemas elsewhere it supposedly.....supposedly will limit DVD rippin and such.

Sunshine came out on region 1 yesterday and here were my observations. First off I never saw an advert for it. It was on sale $19.99 at most places and was in the Best Buy flyer but there was no promotion - or at least very little. With that said the good news is that today Sunshine is #12 and #32 on Amazon's top DVD sales list (Blu-Ray and DVD respectively) and that is pretty good. Many DVD reviews are giving the movie high marks and so finally some people are hopefully discovering the movie.
I have yet to watch the disc, which is basically the same as region 2 but I can't wait.

Quick observations regarding the Blu-Ray release: Number one with a bullet (may apply to the Region One disc in general)-- and I can't emphasize how much this was MAKING ME INSANE: On the cover, Chris Evans has his eyes open. I've been ranting at my Region Two disc for months: "That's the best picture you could get of him? He's GOT HIS EYES CLOSED!" Ahem. Numbers two, etc.: I can't find the two dozen or so "webisodes" that were on the Region Two DVD. In their place, I'm seeing beefier, less-twitchy behind-the-scenes snippets. Three of my faves: the cast rehearsing, an extended (I think) zero-G sequence, in which we get to hear Cillian utter the infamous "Oh, FOOOOOK--!", and a Pinbacker making-the-makeup bit, which effectively doubles Mark Strong's screen time (always a good thing . Perhaps I'm mis-seeing things, and all of these bits (and a few others) are on the DVD; I'll have to cross-check later.... Oh, and Blu-Ray takes FOREVER to load. God. It's like they should have elevator music playing or something. Some of us aren't that young anymore, disc people: could we please get the show on the bleepingmintzer road already...?

You would think young people would be attracted to the speedy options. Anyways, I'm without a Blu-Ray player (or a HD-DVD one for that matter) so any feedback on the new Blu-Ray release is appreciated. Thanks Kali for the mini review!

You're welcome, chero! I think the slow loading time is due to there being so very much data on these Blu-Ray discs. Several reviews I've read of the "Sunshine" disc complain, too, of the virtually impenetrable copy protection that Fox has incorporated on the disc: some players simply can't crack through. As it is, the load time for "Sunshine" on my player is roughly ninety (!) seconds.... It's official: the webisodes are NOT on the Blu-Ray disc. But among the Blu-Ray-only snippets is a segment showing the rehearsal for the payload showdown-- Mark Strong lugging Cillian Murphy around by the throat, Cillian looking like he's really, REALLY hoping the wires will hold, that sort of thing.... More on the spacesuits, too, showing Cillian (again on wires) rehearsing the shield repair scene. Illuminating: even in that massive suit, next to the stunt team, he still looks like a delicate fella! ;D Personal note: I'm constantly bragging up my ancient speakers, a gargantuan pair of first-generation-digital Awards from the Atlantis Company of Minneapolis. (Gargantuan: uh huh. These things were made back in the day when even a rack in the Library of Congress would groan in fear at the thought of having to hold "bookshelf speakers.") I've got 'em hooked to a Denon digital receiver, and tonight I cued up some "Sunshine" highlights and kind of cranked the whole mess to eleven, so to say, and-- WOW.The Awards loved it. I loved it. The basement floor was rumbling. And that floor, through a layer of pasty old rec-room carpeting, is made of CONCRETE. Of course, though, now I'm stark raving deaf. If folks wouldn't mind posting more loudly for a couple of days, I'd appreciate it.... MODIFIED MUCH LATER: The webisodes ARE on the disc. (So much for "official." ) Let's hear it for POP-UP MENUS...!
