I hope for your guy's sake, it's as fast as the UK's. I'm so excited for the deleted scenes. *hopes so much the Oxygen Room was included or at least intensely discussed*

The DVD is out in the UK now - Amazon. Make sure you go there and click on the 'helpful' or 'not helpful' buttons on reviews! Or review it yourself...

Only had time to peek at the deleted scenes--
Sorry, nimue: no blatant "Oxygen Garden." But there is a lovely little glimpse from Cassie....
Favorite deleted line, also from Cassie: "I heard you the first time, Mace--!"
Haven't listened to the commentary, so I don't know the "official" reasons for the deletion of these bits, so I'll lob a few of my typically ill-informed theories:
1. They ratcheted back the tension.
2. Several of them REALLY look like bits from another, earlier Fox sci-fi release, whose name I shall not name out of fear of starting yet another "No, it isn't/Yes, it is exactly like [insert name of supposed antecedent film here]" battle.
Honestly, though-- at first glimpse, I don't know why most of this material was cut. It helps to illustrate the layout of the ship, it explains the logistics behind at least one key scene, it fleshes out the characters, and it wouldn't have over-lengthened the film at all. (As it stands, the film's running time feels a little short to me.) So... commentary, here I come...!

I got the UK DVD yesterday from Amazon (I have a PAL capable DVD player). There was, IMO, a pretty good look at the oxygen garden and Corazon digging up the carrots, etc. in the deleted scenes...but no commentary. Loved the deleted scenes and wish they would have left them in. I especially liked the "airlock" scene before boarding Icarus I. (Kali, is your sig a reference to a lyric off of King Swamp's "Wiseblood"?) @hunter: The DVD (and extras) are incredible, but nothing's like watching the film in a dark theater!

... could've sworn I saw a "commentary" option. Ah, well, that's what I get for having an eyeglasses prescription this odd....
(Re: the sig: Yes, it is! "Kiss the Sun" is just about tops on my [admittedly very short] list of shamelessly romantic rock ballads.)

also got the uk dvd and YES, there IS commentary. actually, there are 2 separate sections for commentary, BOTH of which are incredible to listen to, while watching the film. spoiler warning?.... one is from danny boyle, and he does explain why they deleted the original long (and AWESOME) opening segment, which showed that gorgeous snippet from the oxygen garden, (michelle was GREAT) and also loved the benny segment, cooking. i wish they had left it in, as (imo) some of the most beautiful parts in the film, were the 'daily, mundane, interactions' with the crew members. the other commentary is from dr. brian cox, and it's really interesting to hear his perspective from the science point of view. they are both disarmingly charming and insightful, and it's WELL WORTH watching the film 2 more times, to have both of their view points, which truly enhance the viewing experience. (i understood the film FAR BETTER with the commentary...especially the layout of the space ship and the bomb). as a hiro fan, it's also really terrific to hear both of them talk about hiro's performance, in his 'BIG SCENE'....i clearly remember gia's blog about it, and to hear danny and brian both ADD their thoughts about his acting 'chops' is a real treat. the dvd (and both commentaries) GREATLY ENHANCES the film! BIG kudo's. pssst...i'm sure it's been mentioned before, but the dvd is region 2 so US fans need to have an all region player. also, the japan dvd version releases soon, and for hiro fans, it's worth getting, as i believe i read that hiro dubbed his own part in japanese.

As rei said above, there is commentary...I missed it when I watched the deleted scenes last night. My mistake. Going off topic about your sig... RE: King Swamp -- I am more of a Shriekback fan -- they are one of the only "80s alternative" bands I still listen to. I came across "Wiseblood" b/c King Swamp had a Shriekback member (Dave Allen). That was a long time ago...Try "This Big Hush" off of Shriekback's "Oil & Gold" for a great (and very dark) ballad. You may recognize it from the movie "Manhunter". Quite sinister.

Trust me: "Oil and Gold"-- the whole darn thing-- has been near the top of the playstack for a long, long time. "Faded Flowers" is playing right now-- that one really gets under my skin. And then "Nemesis" gives us the word "parthenogensis" as an entire lyrical line-- I love it!
