I only just saw Sunshine a couple of weeks ago, but the five times I'm watched it since then have only convinced me that it is the best film I've seen in years, and perhaps my favorite. So, I felt compelled to write fanfic. This would be my first of the Sunshine variety, a short, fluffly one-shot, but I'm playing with the idea of continuing it. I suppose it all depends on how you guys like it. It's Capsie, btw, with a hint of Mapsie, because I am torn. Heh. Without further ado...

"Capa?" A soft voice called him back from sleep, and he felt someone gently shaking his shoulder. It took him a moment to focus on the figure, his mind still immersed in sleep.
"Cassie?" He slurred, rubbing a hand across his face as he attempted to regain full consciousness. "Is something wrong?" He half-sat up, already preparing to launch himself into whatever needed to be done.
"No, no. Everything's fine. I just...wondered if we could talk?" Inwardly, Capa was torn between annoyance that he's been woken for no urgent reason, and a small glow of happiness that Cassie had come to him with whatever was on her mind. He wasn't used to having friends, and even the people he had worked with everyday back on Earth had only ever been acquaintances. He supposed having only eight people to talk to in an enclosed space for 10 months made distancing yourself a little difficult. And even Capa, who usually preferred to avoid human contact, wasn't entirely anti-social. With Cassie, he had formed the closest bond- closer, perhaps, than any he'd ever had outside of his family. With this thought in mind, he pushed himself back against the wall behind his bed. "What would you like to talk about?" He asked.
"Sorry for waking you..." Cassie added belatedly. "I- Well, I have a favor to ask of you, actually." Capa merely fixed her with a questioning gaze.
"Capa-- Robert. We're friends, right?" Nervously, Cassie twisted her hands together, her eyes aimed at the rumpled sheets rather than at Capa. For his part, Capa was equally unsettled.
"Sure, Cassie," he returned, confused, a small frown forming on his brow.
"Right. Good." Cassie seemed unsure how to proceed, increasing Capa's curiosity and confusion.
"Was that the favor?" he asked, genuinely puzzled as to where this was going.
"No," she said, frustration evident in her increasingly agitated movement. She waved her hands around as she talked, as if she hoped they would speak for her and save her the embarrassment. Finally, she gathered her determination and forged ahead in a rush. "I haven't been sleeping well and I've tried everything but nothing's working and I was wondering if maybe you could-" she nearly choked on the last words- "hold me? ...While I fall asleep? Just- not forever, I mean. Just once, to see if that helps? I'm just so tired." By the end of this sentence, Cassie's shoulders had slumped, the heels of her hands pushed into her eyes, and Capa noticed for the first time how drained she looked. Her hair was pulled back in a careless bun, her eyes were bloodshot, and her figure looked bent with fatigue. However strange a request, Capa felt every ounce of sympathy he possessed go out to her. Wordlessly, he pulled back the blankets he lay under and smiled welcomingly. Cassie let go a great sigh of relief and gratefully crossed the short distance to his bed. She lay down with her back towards him, and felt his arms slide around her gently. The warmth and comfort enveloping her was such a welcome reprieve from the cold, sterile environment of most of the ship that Cassie hummed a little in happiness. Smiling, although she couldn't see it, Capa nestled her closer to him and leaned his head down to kiss her hair. Within minutes, Cassie drifted off to sleep, her loneliness and insomnia gone in the presence of the best friend she'd ever had. Capa laid awake a while longer, contemplating the small woman in his arms. As he too, fell asleep, he wondered what she'd think about making this a permanent arrangement...
From the door to his and Capa's shared quarters, Mace watched them a moment, his face void of emotion. Finally, he turned and made his way to the oxygen garden, contemplating why it is that the geeky guys always get the girls.
