Ok, I don't write a lot of fic, but I couldn't resist this idea
Title: The Winged Horse.
Author: Sam (AKA pygmy)
Fandom: Sunshine
Genre: General, Fluff
Rating: G
Characters: Capa, Cassie
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything
Summary: Capa and Cassie have a midnight chat.
Capa couldn’t sleep. He had laid uncomfortably on his bed listening to his snoring friend in the next room rising and heading into the control room. He sat with bottle of warm water, remembering the story his Mum had told him when he was a young boy. A story about the stars, a tale of a horse, a winged horse. He remembered sneaking out every night to look around the sky, looking for the flying horse amongst the stars but at the time all the sparkling spots looked the same to him.
Somewhere in the darkness he heard someone move, he quickly realised it was Cassie walking in, he thought about saying something but couldn‘t find his voice.
He sat there for a while listening to Cassie wonder around the room, not knowing if she knew he was there or not. Then he thought he heard her whimper. He sat up, groaned and rubbed his neck, he looked around the room and noticed her small figure in the corner. He stood up slowly and started to walk towards her.
“Cassie? Can’t you sleep?” as soon as he said it he regretted asking such an obvious question.
She shrugged her shoulders not looking up from her small hands. He wasn’t sure if he should sit down or leave her to her thoughts.
“I miss home” Cassie said suddenly.
“Erm…Right” Capa sat down slowly thinking she might tell him to go away, but she didn’t.
“I keep thinking about the town I grew up in, and how it will have changed since I last saw it” She paused “if we don’t succeed I will feel like I sentenced my own family to death, I will feel as if it‘s my fault” Her voice broke and she put her head in her hands.
Capa couldn’t think of anything to say, he had never seen her this upset, she had always spoke of her family but never with such sadness. He put his hand on her shoulder, something he had done many times to Cassie when he couldn’t find any words.
“My family will die too” he said quietly, he wasn’t sure this was the right thing to say, but the words had left his mouth before he could stop them.
She looked at him slowly and he couldn’t tell if it was sympathy or hatred in her eyes.
“What I mean is, that‘s what drives me, why this mission is the most important thing. It‘s why we have to succeed even if we don‘t survive at least everyone we love does” He smiled awkwardly at her.
They both sat there silently for a while, Capa’s hand still on her shoulder.
“Do you mind me asking what happened about your family?” she asked quietly and awkwardly.
“Not much to tell really, they are just normal people”
“You don’t want to talk about them?” she smiled “sorry, sometimes I just feel like talking about home. Just to remember”
He took a deep breath “I became interested in space because my mum would tell me bedtime stories about the stars” he paused when he realised what he was saying and looked at Cassie. She was staring at him with caring eyes, he suddenly felt very comfortable talking.
“I would sneak out into the garden when she went to bed to try and find the different stars, I think she always knew what I was doing but she never tried to stop me, It’s weird, I was just thinking about this before you came in”
He stopped when he realised Cassie’s hand was on his, he hadn’t noticed her doing this and stared at their entwined fingers resting on her shoulder. He noticed this and began talking rather fast to cover up his embarrassment.
“Anyway, that‘s when I decided I wanted to learn about space and then physics took over my life”
“Really?” she said sounding interested, and smiling at him “what was your Mothers name?”
“Genevieve”
Then she smiled, turned away from him and stood up. She searched around the room for a few minutes, stumbling in the darkness, before returning with a flask.
“A toast to Genevieve” She lifted the flask to her mouth
They both drank then sat in a comfortable silence for a long time. Then Cassie suddenly stood up
“I enjoyed our chat, Goodnight Capa”
He smiled up at her and watched her walk away then turn around and walk back to him. She knelt on one knee, leaned in and kissed him on the cheek.
Capa stayed in the corner and slowly fell asleep, where he dreamed of himself and Cassie riding a flying horse.
