I had to write a script using at least five of the "Basic Elements of Film Language" for my Multicultural Film class. I thought it would be fun to share what I wrote, especially since it was inspired from the recent trailers I've seen.
Okay, here we go:
Movie Title: Sunshine
Setting: Icarus II spaceship, control room
Lighting: Low-key lighting (to establish the mood of anxiety and mourning which we’ll later see)
*ZOOM in on two chairs in the control room from behind that are facing the controls of the ship (to establish the main setting and to obtain the feeling of seclusion)
*Dialogue:
Mace, the co-pilot/mechanic of the crew (VOICE-OVER): “Cassie, can you check camera 6 to see what’s going on in the oxygen garden? I’m seeing a disturbance in sector 5 through 9 and we can’t have that area be in any sort of danger.”
*Cut to a MEDIUM CLOSE-UP of Cassie, the pilot of the crew (to see who Mace is talking to)
Cassie: Okay.
*Cut to a POV SHOT as Cassie changes the frequency of one of the several computer screens shown on the control panel and we see the computer screen change to a scene of vibrant green plants everywhere. (to establish what Cassie is doing)
*SHOT/REVERSE SHOT (or MEDIUM CLOSE-UP) of Cassie as she is watching the screen. (to continue her dialogue)
Cassie: Everything looks fine to me.
*Cut to a RACK-FOCUS on Mace and Cassie. First the focus is on Mace and after he is done talking, it goes to Cassie. (to establish a feeling of frenzy and fear)
Mace says in a demanding voice: Lock sectors 5 through 9! A fire has started and is spreading rapidly!
Cassie says worriedly: That means we will have to seal a portion of the oxygen garden.
*Cut to a MEDIUM SHOT of Mace as he looks at Cassie. (to take a step back from the tension a bit)
Mace: We have no time to argue! Just do it!
*Cut to a MEDIUM CLOSE-UP of Cassie. She reaches for the button that locks the sectors.
*Cut to an EXTREME CLOSE-UP of the button as Cassie pushes it down. (to emphasize what is being done and the possible consequences)
*Cut to a MEDIUM CLOSE-UP of Mace as he rests his elbows on the control panel, exhausted.
Mace: Never hesitate when things go wrong. You should act first before anything else messes up. Haven’t you learned anything from training?
*Cut to a RACK-FOCUS to focus back on Cassie.
Cassie is shaken up from the sudden events: …I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me.
*Cut to a PAN of the control panel that Mace and Cassie are sitting in front of and it slowly stops on the one screen that shows the oxygen garden. It ZOOMS on that screen and here we find out that Harvey, the communications officer of the crew, is hidden within the plants, taking notes for Corazon, the biologist of the crew. (to establish what will happen in the things to come…)
*FADE to black.
