I did a search of "pompei" and didn't turn up any previous threads on this topic so forgive me if it's already been discussed.
There's much discussion on here about Pinbacker which I've enjoyed but I've often wondered just how the rest of his crew met their death. We see many, but I doubt all, the rest of the crew of the Icarus I in the observation room remaining as ashen figures reminiscent of Pompei.
Since we don't know much else I'm going to offer a feasible back story.
Pinbacker after having gone crazy realizes the rest of his crew would never support his idea of abandoning the mission. He may have gone as far as to approach them with the idea and it was formally rejected. Pinbacker then kills the rest of the crew which would allow him to put Icarus I in a permanent orbit of Mercury effectively calling off the mission. Since the crew that was killed in the observation room was arranged in a peaceful fashion I'm going to guess Pinbacker found some way to suddenly allow the sun through at 100% without those in the observation room knowing it as their means of death. Since I don't think there are enough figures in the observation room to account for the rest of the crew I'll assume he killed the remainder in other ways which the camera never saw evidence of when the crew of Icarus II was on board briefly.
As a side note it's interesting that while the rays of the sun instantly decimated antennas when they temporarily emerged from the safety of the shield, the rays of the sun didn't decimate the interior of the observation room but limited the destructive effect to organic matter, and upon finishing burning that organic matter there was an silence and calm (following Searle's death). But I have no problem suspending reality to enjoy good sci fi.
As for Searle, when he got suck on board and decided to off himself in the observation room he somehow seemed to know the observation window was still set to allow 100% through. Does that mean for all the years Icarus I sat waiting the observation room was baking? If that was the case Pinbacker couldn't even go there to worship his god, no wonder he was so cranky and upon getting on board Icarus I went to their still functional observation room where he was later found by Capa.
By all means critique.
