This character deserves his own thread because he is so complex and interesting. Here are my current thoughts about him: 1. How could Pinbacker survive on Icarus I for 7 years? Is it only because of the functional Oxygen Garden? 2. How did he get burned? Did he obsess over the Sun like Searle, but on a more extreme level? 3. What happened to his crew mates? Was he responsible for their deaths? 4. Does he love Capa? (He called him "angel" afterall... THIS IS A JOKE! Ha, ha, ha... ) One interesting fact to remember from Searle's character backstory: Searle is the only crew member who did not have a counter-part on Icarus I. Icarus I had a doctor, but no psychiatrist.

Hooray for this thread! 1. I'm thinking it has something to do with the Oxygen Garden... it is working after all... Eating carrots and tomatoes, perhaps??? 2. I think maybe he had been at a similar situation like Kaneda (exposed to the sun) but perhaps he was fast enough to get out of it but not fast enough that it left scars... 3. Hm... maybe their mainframe broke down and they don't know how to repair it, (perhaps the mechanic died??) and since they are unable to move forward or return back, they decided to do what Searle did (I wonder if they had sunglasses on) 4. Gonna ignore this question... 5. (I'm adding this one) How did Pinbacker get to Icarus II without anyone realising??? He didn't hugged on Capa (I'm using the word hugged as to create a Mapa moment... )... how on earth (or should I say space) did he get there? And in one piece too! (Unlike poor Harvey being left out) Sidetrack a while... Emoticons for everyone... 1. Danny | (the Rockstar!) | 2. Captain Kaneda | | 3. Corrie/ Corazon | | 4. Dr. Searle | | 5. Mace | | 6. Capa/Mr Crazypants | | 7. Pinbacker | | 8. Harvey | (praying to reach home safely) | 9. Cassie | (cause she was in US military) | 10. Trey | (the Cook!) |

#5 is tough to answer. Remember, though, both ships were connected before the "accident," so Pinbacker wouldn't have needed a spacesuit. Also, wasn't the airlock door open the entire time?
I love the icon table!

During filming we kept talking about Pinbacker eating (he had enough food with dry supplies and the Oxygen Garden's food)... we just kept cracking up imagining him cooking up a stir-fry, sitting down, eating it, doing the dishes... and then running off around the ship screaming like a madman! He got on the ship because they were docked. Icarus wouldn't have noticed him because he doesn't have a comms unit on. Also, the airlock doors can be operated manually (ie when Searle manually opens the airlock on Icarus 1 and Capa blows the airlock open with the button at the end of the film) therefore Pinbacker can completely avoid any interaction with Icarus. Icarus doesn't 'scan for life', she isn't 'all-knowing'. She is basically a very sophisticated version of the computer in your car!

Thank you so much for the explanation, Gia.... it does start to make sense now... that image of him cooking and everything is amusing... hehe...
As for Icarus, I thought she can scan for life... She really is a very sophisticated version... how I wish I have one of those... BTW, she has a beautiful voice, can I ask whose voice is it?

Chipo Chung was the voice of Icarus. You can find this information in the About section at SFO.

That's what I thought too. Searle got himself sunburnt at that 3.1% level. Remember him picking bits of skin off his face (yuck!)? Pinbacker must have used the Sun room (is that the correct name?) over and over...
I guess he's been slightly deprived of the Sun for over 7 years because the Icarus I filters were destroyed. Maybe that's why he went straight to the Icarus II's Sun room!

Sun room = Observatory Room I think hongi is right! Perhaps since the video transmission from Icarus I didn't really show Pinbacker as burnt up (I could be wrong), Pinbacker was recently burned when he went into Icarus II's Observatory. Like what hongi said, he was deprived of the Sun for many years. Just a guess!

Here's what I think:
Firstly, the captain of any sort of mission would have a huge, huge amount of influence among the other members of the crew. It would've been really easy to pretend that something awful had happened to the mainframe, so it would stall them. While they were stuck in orbit, just sitting out in the middle of space, there would've been a lot of time for Pinbacker to influence the rest of the crew. I think the rest of the crew would have known that they weren't going to make it back to earth, and they would've accepted it-- hence the reason they were positioned as they were when they died. I think they'd have made a unanimous decision to just go on and end it all there instead of prolonging their suffering.
And as for Pinbacker's burns and scars, I think something went wrong when they were all ending their lives in the observatory room. Maybe something happened to make Pinbacker change his mind in time enough to get out of the room before he was killed-- but not before he was deformed. Maybe he realized that there would be another crew coming to try and finish the job, and he decided that it was up to him to stop them, so he got out, but only just.
I feel like I had more to add to that, but now I can't remember... Maybe it'll come back to me if you guys keep talking.

Does anyone remember the video transmission that Pinbacker was in? I think he looked more human in that. We never really get a good look of him in the movie though so it's tough to say.

I thought I'd talk about this here rather than on IMDB (I'll probably get attacked again there )... People are talking about Pinbacker having "super powers"... He's got nothing of the sort... When he picks Capa up they are on the bomb... Think about what happens when Capa and Cassie fall down the side of the bomb... they fall and fall and then land. The bomb is in the shape of a cube and has its own gravity which isn't 1G (it doesn't have the mass of the Earth, right?). So though Capa and Cassie fall for a while they eventually land because the bomb's gravity attracts them. Therefore Pinbacker can *appear* stronger as Capa doesn't weigh as much in less than 1G. and Pinbacker can easily lift him.. It's why on the Moon (which has one-sixth the gravity of Earth) the astronauts were able to jump around in their spacesuits which weighed 180lbs...

I haven't even touched the Sunshine IMDb boards after a couple of days past the UK release. It never occured to me to even think that Pinbacker had "super powers," though. I really just don't understand a lot of things people are saying about the film...

IMDb should be a censored word...

I haven't even touched the Sunshine IMDb boards after a couple of days past the UK release. It never occured to me to even think that Pinbacker had "super powers," though. I really just don't understand a lot of things people are saying about the film... I've been getting a few comments on the blog which I've left unapproved. First, I just won't approve abusive or libelous comments period. Second, I won't approve violently negative comments coming from someone who doesn't give a valid email address. Third, if someone's negative comments are just *dumb* then I *personally* make a value judgment and decide that their comment isn't worth publishing. I had someone (American) who sent about 10 different comments all extremely abusive about the American release date (I couldn't even put anything up here cos the swearing filter would make it read: 'thingy this' and 'thingy that'!)... Then someone else who even tried loads of times to comment, even on my *personal* blog about how the whole film was stupid because there *wouldn't* be a 'last man alone with God' because people wouldn't even *look* like people in the future. Seriously.
