Whoa! I've just realised how cool something is in the film (and why I continue to think that Alex Garland is a fricken genius)... When Capa meets Pinbacker for the first time, he puts out his hand and touches him, which makes Pinbacker flinch, then Capa says 'My God. My God. Captain Pinbacker...' and Pinbacker says, 'Not your God, mine!'... Read this passage from the Bible, John 20:17 (King James version): ...Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.Surely, that's what that scene is from...don't you think?

I officially have a booknerd-crush on Alex. In-freaking-credible. Anyone who writes and makes clever allusions to other books is worthy of my firstborn. I especially love that he's used a passage from the Bible... It's so fitting for Pinbacker, and yet it doesn't fit into Alex's idea of the movie (according to the introduction he wrote for the script book) at all.
I can't even explain how much this made me just fall right in love with him. Seriously. Geez. There's so much subtext in this film. It's ridiculous, and I love it.

I don't know if I ever wrote about this on SunshineDNA, but I'm fairly sure Searle is named after John Searle, most famous (to me) for his Chinese Room argument... which is all about consciousness...

Holy nuts.
I was reading through that Wikipedia article about the Chinese room and as soon as I read this sentence it struck me really hard that humanity itself is one giant Chinese room: "The conclusion of this argument is that running a program cannot create understanding."
That is the film. Holy crap, that is the film.
I just died a little. That stupid thing with the tears happened again. *facepalm*
/ridiculous emotional basketcase-ness.

Now you know why I'm all gushy about Alex. The guy's a fricken genius...

If there is a god, it's Alex Garland. Nuff said.

The Chinese Room argument is completely logical. I never thought about it before. Amazing...
I love how we are discovering all of the hidden inspirations inside this brilliant film. ;D No pun intended... okay, maybe a little.

Awesome! I'm sure there are more passages from the bible in the film.

But Pinbacker says "Not your god, mine!" Doesn't that allude to perhaps a different god entirely...dare I say, Satan? Since his god is NOT our god... Damn it's too early in the morning for this

A philosophy thought-experiment. Look at the links.
I am sure that Pinbackers god is not satan. That would not fit the science vs religion conflict.
