Was thinking, below, how "Searle" sounds like "sear." Thought further: Capa: "head"-- as opposed, maybe, to Corazon: "heart"--? And Cassie-- "Cassandra"-- she-who-is-not-believed--? Mace: medieval overtones: blunt efficiency, possibly violent...? Trey: "three"--? Possible phonetic connection to "be-tray-al"...? Just thinking....

And a weird one--!
Harvey. Suddenly thought: James Stewart and giant imaginary rabbits-- as in "Harvey." As in "not really there."
So maybe Harvey is the android.
(Uh, right. I haven't been drinking, I swear--!)

And now that I've noted my flub-- it's "Cassidy," not "Cassandra"-- I gotta ask: Why is she the only one with a nickname...?

No idea. For all we know, "Capa" could be a code name along with the others...besides Cassidy, of course. Have you ever hear of an American named "Capa" before? Hmmm...it's all very questionable to me, too.

No idea. For all we know, "Capa" could be a code name along with the others...besides Cassidy, of course. Have you ever hear of an American named "Capa" before? Hmmm...it's all very questionable to me, too. Got the names from the hat picture over in the merchandising thread. (By the way, I want a Sunshine watch. I looove watches...!) But-- back to our regularly scheduled thread: I'm not trying to be obsteperous-- but the ancient feminist in me bristled slightly when I noted that the one diminutive nickname went to one of the women. (See: okay, yeah: maybe just a tiny bit obsteperous. I should NOT be reading that "B[/li][li]tch" magazine essay anthology!) I mean, come on: "Cassie" is just one syllable away from "Cassidy." No one's calling Kaneda "Kanny Boy," now, are they...? But: "Capa" (and I doubt he'll be "Cap" or "Cappy" in the movie! ): thinking it still boils down to "intellect" vs. "heart." That's kind of a weird-- or oddly specific-- name for anyone, actually. Sort of like when you get a dentist named "Zahn." So I'd've felt better if Cassie were "Cassidy." Or if they'd apprised us of everyone's first names. What I get for attending a women's college...!

I wonder what their last names are... do you think they are hiding them because two of them are married to each other??

I think maybe they are referring to Cassidy as Cassie to humanize the character more. From the start, they want the audience to identify with her and hope that she survives.
Trey could also refer to three mistakes (with the third being a big one).
Kaneda (yes Punctuator I will post my thoughts)-Nothing against Canada as a country (love that film festival), but I immediately slipped into South Park mode with "blame Canada". The only other thing I could come up with was to mess with the letters leading to "a naked".

Re: Rose Byrne.
They should've labeled her as "Cassidy" and let us know her nickname within the context of the film. Putting her nickname on the "official" cast portraits makes her seem weak. Girly, if you will. They didn't call Ripley "Ellen" or "Ellie" on the cast photos for Alien, now, did they? And we never even learned Lambert's first name. Oh, how far we've come....
There: I got growly.

Kaneda (yes Punctuator I will post my thoughts)....The only other thing I could come up with was to mess with the letters leading to "a naked". Don't say this too casually because there are a lot of Sanada fans on this forum. They could start devising Sunshine fanfiction yet to be shared here. Then again, as long as the fanfiction is properly rated, anything goes...did I just blast open a new door on this forum??As for the discussion about Cassidy, I do take some offense around her being the only one with a nickname. Hopefully somewhere in the movie they redeem her seemingly weak standing among the rest of the crew. Is her role as 'Pilot' truly enough? Anyone have any suggestions on how the movie could approach this? My guess: Cassidy kills someone 'bad' and survives....for now.

I don't take any offense to it at all. I think maybe it's just looking into it a bit too analytically. I mean, maybe she's just gone by Cassie her whole life? I know girls who go by Mandy, and they have their whole life. I did until I went into second grade and decided I was much too grown up for it.

Let's just hope that both Cassie and Corazon kick some butt in this movie. Michelle Yeoh definitely has the skills.

Wanna know something weird? I never knew Cassie was named Cassidy until this thread. Strange.
