Someone mentioned on the Blog about the music that was played for the teaser trailer of Sunshine and I decided to Google the title of it and found interesting results... The title of the song was "Requiem for a Dream" and according to Wikipedia, it was a 1978 novel by Hubert Selby, Jr. that later became a film which was directed by Darren Aronofsky. Here's a quote from the entry that I found to be very interesting... "All of the characters in the movie hold on to memories of better times and long for meaningful connection with others. These, along with the fantastic dream worlds and delusions they gradually withdraw into, are violently and jarringly shattered in the film's denouement by the bleak and brutal reality of their present circumstances. In the DVD commentary for the film, Darren Aronofsky stresses the idea that by choosing to escape reality with denial and delusion, the characters are only destroying themselves further. The hopes they have for connection with each other and with their happier pasts give way as they are separated and subject against their wills to indifferent and exploitative treatment at the hands of strangers." It's just an observation.

So I'm watching the trailer-- and thinking of some of Danny Boyle's directorial comments to Cillian on the (I think it was the--) Special FX podcast-- and there's that whole holo-decky thing that shows trees and whatnot, right? And then I'm hearing Frances McDormand in my head saying, in her full "Fargo" accent, "Oh, that's not very reasonable!" See, to a Midwesterner who's done a fair share of big gray nothing winter doldrums, that virtual reality stuff-- basically, it looks like an HD TV setup run amok-- seems a waste of money, tech, and spaceship real estate. I'm assuming it's there so that
1. The crew as a whole doesn't go insane-- or MORE insane.
2. The science folks can model problems they need to solve.
3. [Relating to 1] In case things go, umm, badly, they'll all have something nice to look at while they wait to die out there in the sunless black nothing of space.
SO--! -- now that we're all cheered up:
What would YOUR personal virtual-reality session show?
Mine would be the rocky north shore of Lake Superior, looking out over the water. Big blocky chunks of blackish granite-- and behind, up in the hills, the leaves just starting to turn. A clear mid-fall sky heading into evening.
Anyone else...?

A clear mid-fall sky heading into evening. *sigh* that's where I grew up *sigh* I'd probably choose that too as long as I'd be able to throw rocks into the Lake... that would keep me from going all crazypants.
