Given the last scene in the film-- but given, too, that I'm not exactly an expert on Australia's climate-- might it not already be too late to save the Earth's biosphere? I find myself wondering how many plant and animal species have been lost at this point, as well as what percentage of the world's population has already starved or frozen to death. (That's why I set my "training" fics like "Sleepers" and "Teamwork" in and around Duluth, Minnesota: if the world's temperature were to plummet, I'd want to be in an area that's accustomed to cold-- an area with insulated housing, storm doors, double windows, central heating, and folks who know not only the life-saving magic of layered clothing but how not to drive like utter idiots on snow and ice.)
So... just thoughts. Tropical areas and milder temperate zones damaged or destroyed...? Widespread starvation, especially in China and India...? (What would happen even with the loss of a single rice crop...?) The population at large learning to subsist on lichen and codfish...?
Are the Icarus II and her crew already too late? Now, that would be an alternate-ending zinger, especially if any of them made it back....

The Earth has gone through plenty of climate change in the past. Eruptions of supervolcanos, asteroid dust clouds, ice ages, etc. Life has suffered, but enough life grew stronger and survived. I don't think 50 years would be enough to destroy the Earth's biosphere beyond repair. Ice Ages have lasted thousands of years and we're still here. I guess I don't see 50 years of widespread starvation as a problem in the grand scheme of things. It wouldn't take those areas long to repopulate once the sun is back to normal.
