According to what it says on Wikipedia, limited release films often get a wide release later on. Doesn't make the situation any better, but it's something. Anyways, this news is probably not official.

according to filmjerk, which is a great resource for the release schedules on movies in the states (often lists the exact theatres, especially when in limited release.....they listed TWTSTB, (cillians movie) in l.a........they currently have this listing for SUNSHINE. (i kept the other films opening on that day, so that you could see how they list) www.filmjerk.com is the source. THE EARLY REPORT, part 2. (notes release date changes, etc.) anyway, they (currently) show 2500 locations. Friday, September 14, 2007 Balls of Fury (Rogue Pictures): 1500 plus locations The Brave One (Warner Brothers Pictures): 2500 plus locations December Boys (Warner Independent Pictures): Major markets Eastern Promises (Focus Features): Major markets Feast of Love (MGM): 1500 plus locations Jake's Run (The Bigger Picture/Fox Faith): Select markets Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour (Freestyle Releasing): 2500 plus locations Sunshine (Fox Searchlight Pictures): 2500 plus locations BTW, altho i live in the states, i happened to be in london right now, so i got to see SUNSHINE last night with another hiro friend ....WOW. brittany and chero....how do i find the area for people who have seen the film on your site?

brittany and chero....how do i find the area for people who have seen the film on your site? Go to the About Sunshine board and at the top, there's a sub-board called Fan Movie Discussion. There's a question in its description and all you have to do is answer it. If you have any problems with the password, feel free to PM me or Chero. Also, thanks for the info!

Well, if I can travel to see TWTSTB I'm sure as hell traveling to see Sunshine. Esp. 'cos I'll be driving by then, hopefully. Although of course, if you really think about it, 2500 locations isn't much across all 50 states. But hey, at least we get something. Road trip!

Actually, 2500 theaters isn't bad for Fox Searchlight. Michelle Yeoh's Memoirs of a Geisha from Sony Pictures opened in 1800 theaters. I hope the marketing dept. is learning from its mistakes. The advertising campaign in Japan is widely regarded as a failure by the Japanese entertainment press. Emerald

Well, I live in DC (Arlington counts as DC, as it is inside the Beltway), and I saw TWTSTB a few weekends ago at the Landmark E Street Theater. It was an EXCELLENT film; I highly recommend it, and not just for the Cillian-factor, either. TWTSTB is on limited release in DC also, with only a few theaters showing it (two by last count). In fact, I'm lucky to live in such a large metro area, else I probably would have had to wait for it to come out on DVD. That is SUCH disappointing news to hear that 'Sunshine' will be limited release, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to find a theater near me that will be showing it nonetheless. I am truly disgusted by the stranglehold Hollywood has on which movies get shown where. Most small, independent films, especially ones that are not made in the US, are available only in big cities. Meanwhile, dreck such as '300', 'Norbit', and 'Premonition' enjoys wide release and makes a ton of money in consequence. Gia has heard this rant before and will hear it again RE 28 Weeks Later (same story), but I'm truly appalled at how isolated we have become from the rest of the movie-viewing world. It's the NIH syndrome, as translated to the movie world. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ((

I'd just like to mention that Fox Searchlight (and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Fox Atomic is included in this-- Atomic is 28WL, but Searchlight is Sunshine) is shit when it comes to widely releasing films (in America, anyway). Fox, as a whole, is shit when it comes to submitting promotional materials for films, but even distributing them is a horror story. The film I Think I Love My Wife was released on March 16 by Fox Searchlight (which really just pissed me off because that was originally when Sunshine was going to be released by the same company), and I believe it was called "wide release," but our eight-screen didn't get a copy of it.
The moral of the story is basically that Fox's sub-branches suck at distributing films. In America, anyway.

The funny (both ways :/) part is that my local theater will have posters for films (such as Brick and 28WL) and they don't release them there! And it has around 15-20 films playing there. It's so sad.
