After Trey kills himself, Mace grabs something off the floor and puts it in Capa's hands saying "THIS belongs HERE." I couldn't really see what exactly he grabbed... like 75% chance comm link (symbolic of Trey), 25% chance knife Trey used (symbolic of suicide). In fact, my first time watching Sunshine, I thought Mace's gasping expression after the fight broke apart was that he was accidentally stabbed by Capa.
Well, I'm pretty sure it was the comm link that Mace grabbed, but I guess my question still remains... what did Mace mean by "this belongs here."? A second before that he describes Trey's act as "taking responsibility," so when he blames Capa for the initial decision to change course, implying that Capa didn't "take responsibility," was it a "Trey's death is your fault," or one step further, "you should've killed yourself in Trey's place."?

I didn't think it was the scalpel or the comms link. I believed he took a swipe of Trey's blood and smeared it in Capa's hand meaning Trey's blood was in Capa's hands... his death was on Capa's hand. I think he meant a little of both. That Capa was responsible for the screw-ups and that he deserved to die... not Trey.

Yep, it was blood. What Mace meant was that it was Capa's decision that they stop by Icarus I, therefore resulting in Trey's mistake whereby Kaneda died and later Searle and Harvey and ultimatedly Trey's death Mace was always against the thought of visiting Icarus I.

Yeah, and for damn good reason. Although, I s'pose it's not the first time the smartest guy on the ship effectively killed everyone on board...

Yes, thank you all so much! I didn't really know what to expect when I joined. Usually you find long-time members entrenched to prove their superiority by nitpicking posts, starting arguments, and generally tearing everyone else down. I'm very impressed I haven't encountered that so far! Seems like a very supportive community. :-)

But of course Neiru. Any fan of Sunshine is welcome here. And besides, old posters have as much to learn from new ones as the new ones from the old.

I should've asked the guys at the repair shop to save a few scrapings of that "blood." It took 'em weeks to clean it off Capa's watch!

Sure-- and if you're ever in Minnesota, you can find me at the Science Museum in St. Paul. Just look for the triceratops wearing wire-frame glasses....
