The Official-Official Truly Legal Sdtk Thread
« Thread Started on Nov 1, 2007, 5:54pm »

RULES:

1. Links ONLY to legitimate online retail sites (i.e., iTunes, Amazon, HMV, etc.) and to OFFICIAL Fox press releases regarding the soundtrack

2. No mentioning of stuff coming from ILLEGITIMATE download sites (i.e., Bittorrent, Limewire, Shady Bob's House O' Bargain Downloads, or "that one guy I know who met the cousin of someone from the Ukraine over spring break")

I expect we'll be sitting here listening to the crickets chirp for some time, but them's the breaks. You want to share any unofficial bootleg copies of the soundtrack amongst yourselves, please confine said sharing to PMs or, better yet, keep it off the site altogether. We're not here to promote or condone illegal behavior, and the sharing of leaked, unauthorized files is, in fact, ILLEGAL at this point in history.

So if you have news regarding the official, Fox-authorized, retail release of the soundtrack from "Sunshine," please post that news here. Anything else-- rumors, gossip, the ubiquitous wink-wink, nudge-nudge: keep it under the table where it belongs.

Keep your eyes on soundtrack.net, as they're quite good on picking up on forthcoming releases.

So I'm assuming there isn't even a whiff of when this damn thing is being released? And what does SDTK mean?

'Sunshine' is life-affirming. It brings back the wonder and awe in life that is all too often smothered and crushed by the mundane and prosaic. It makes you question, think and feel again as once the world was new. It makes you feel alive, reborn, revived. It touches your very soul and asks it "are you there?" before shocking it back into life. Who needs drugs when you have 'Sunshine'?

SDTK = Soundtrack

Condensed to prevent a truncated title.

I don't know, how "offical" this is, but the moderators may delete this post, if it does not fit in here.

A few weeks ago I sent a request to foxmusic concerning the release of the soundtrack. This is what I wrote to "FoxMusic.Publishing@fox.com":

"Hello

Last spring I saw Danny Boyle's film "Sunshine" in a theatre in Germany. Since then I'm have been waiting for the release of the wonderful soundtrack, in which Underworld has collaborated with John Morphy. I immediately downloaded the track "To Heal" from iTunes the day Underworld's new album "Oblivion with bells" was released. But now I would like to have the rest of the soundtrack. Do you know, if there is a release planned, and can you tell me, about how low do I have to wait for it. I'm not quite sure, whether this is the right adress to put such a question, but I don't know, who else I could ask. On iTunes Germany I found the soundtrack from "28 weeks later", which was also a Boyle/Murphy Collabration and which, as I think, you can't buy in local stores. So will the Sunshine Soundtrack also be downloadable?

Thank you very much for you efforts."

I didn't really expect them to write back, but yesterday I recieved the following shocking anwer from them:

"We received your request for the Sunshine soundtrack. Unfortunately,
due to legal issues, we will not be releasing this soundtrack on iTunes
or otherwise.

Best,
[...]"

This is really sad news. Until yesterday I believed, the soundtrack will come, because John Murphy told this in the imdb forum, and then I got this...

However, here's a post from John Murphy that I found on his board over at IMDB, dated November 5, 2007:

"Sunshine WILL get released - when Underworld's lawyers let it come out. Even tho they did only 15% of the score. Pisses me off too. But thanks anyway. Am doing a film called CROSSING OVER right now and I think the score is gonna turn out cool. I think. Best, John Murphy"

Maybe there's a chance that Fox will relinquish the rights to the soundtrack to another label, rather than deal with the legal hassles. So I'm opting for still hoping for the best-- and for watching Mr. Murphy's IMDB "home"....

Anyone care to go knocking over at Underworld's home page...?

[image] The thing i cant understand, is that there are obviously alot of fans of this music out there, and besides the underworld and other artist portions, John Murphy's score takes up the rest of the soundtrack. So instead of trying to release this as a disc w/ the other tracks, why couldnt John Murphy put the tracks up on iTunes or his own website as paid downloads and make some $$ off his own music that way? That way everyone wins.

Hello,

I just tried to buy the soundtrack on Amazon or iTunes and it is nowhere. I came here to find it is not even released? WTF? I have not bought a soundtrack in about 10 years (they were useful in the days before iTunes and cd burners to have a nice mix, since back then you had to get entire albums, you couldn't pick and choose. Pulp Fiction soundtrack was the background to many a college party.) I digress.

I really like the music to the film. I downloaded a lot of 28 days later tracks on iTunes and love John Murphy's stuff. Are there ANY songs from the film for download?

What the industry needs to understand is that a lot of people will pay good money, but if they can't legally buy it, they will just get it for free. I spent hours once trying to buy 1 song of the Twin Peaks film soundtrack, It was not available for purchase, so I just seached the internet and got it for free off a random mp3 site.

Some songs can be downloaded here: http://www.sunshinefan.com/audio.php

You would probably want to go under Music Files.

so can anyone answer my question? why cant John Murphy his music on his own website or on something like iTunes and put each song up for .99 per download ? or go the Radiohead - In Rainbows route and just do it for free for all these fans who want it?

Maybe because the soundtrack, as part and parcel of the "Sunshine" package, isn't solely "his." When he agreed to write the music for the movie, I think by definition he gave up a certain percentage of his rights to that music. He contracted to write it; unfortunately for us-- and for him-- his rights exist as part of his contract with the filmmakers and the studio. By comparison, it's not as if he wrote a beautiful suite of music and then the filmmakers approached him and asked permission to use that music in their film. His rights to the music, as performed and recorded for "Sunshine," are tangled up with the rights of the others who performed and recorded music for the movie. And until Underworld get their heads out of their butts-- oops-- smooth out their portion of the release rights, the whole soundtrack has to remain in limbo.

Which-- yep!-- is grotesquely unfortunate. Future tip for Mr. Murphy: DON'T COLLABORATE ON ORCHESTRAL SCORES!!! Go it alone, buddy: you write beautiful music!
